I’ve been looking for some good resources on how #nonprofits use #AI to achieve their goals. And Stanford Social Innovation Review has a great new series on just this topic. One useful framework that they provide is around the objectives AI is used for. Their four areas are: Structuring Data, Advising, Translating, and Platforms. I’d love to know more about the policies, best practices, and guidelines nonprofits are developing to help guide #safe, #responsible, and #fair use of AI. How do these differ or look similar to for profit corporations and governments? What specific #risks are nonprofits facing when using AI? How does this differ across narrow and #GenAI? Had an enlightening conversation about nonprofits and GenAI last night with the incredibly talented Franny L.! She shared that nonprofits are typically 5 years behind in technology adoption, and why we can't let GenAI turn this into an insurmountable gap. At the same time, the rapid proliferation of AI tools also poses a threat to the very agencies that specialize in providing services and support to nonprofits, unless they evolve quickly themselves. As trusted partners, they’re uniquely positioned to help their clients bridge this gap -- but they must seize the moment themselves first. I can't imagine where we'd be as a society without the mission-driven contributions and support of nonprofits. What resources exist to specifically help them bridge the GenAI divide? If you have ideas, please put them in the comments. PERSPECTIVES: Many nonprofit organizations and small businesses are standing on the threshold in an Artificial Intellegince doorway that will provide challenge, concern, and a sense of uncertainty looming. Given other sector issues, one would think we have enough to keep busy. However, the actions we take regarding AI usage in the coming year can either reinforce the concern or establish a path to the future. Nonprofits, The biggest risk in AI for you isn't failure; it's not getting started. I've been in the AI field for years, wearing different hats. If I have to pick one constant lesson from it – it's that curiosity drives our sustainable, long-term progress. I took a poll 7 days ago (picture below) revealing that 69% of you have been aware of AI's potential before ChatGPT, and 29% still need to. I see a lot of opportunities for us from this poll. 1. It is time for us to act. The first step? Education. Understand what AI can and can't do. Attend sessions on AI, talk to community experts, and chat with your colleagues about AI – regularly. 2. Next, identify a problem that AI can solve. It could be donor engagement or operational efficiency. Talk to someone (internal or external) about what, where, and how you can plan your next steps. You are not alone here. 3. Then, start small. Pilot a project. Measure its impact. Learn from it. And repeat. 4. As you are learning, focus on not the perfect version of AI for your organization but how you can create progress. Progress in ●  building better awareness individually and within your teams about AI ●  building your go-to list of books and resources you need as you evolve in your AI work, and, ●  most importantly, building your village of people who can be your thought partners and champions as you experiment, learn, and implement your next steps. AI isn't the future; it's the present. And we can't afford to miss out. Not for the sake of the opportunities we could lose but for the sake of the consequences that may happen if we continue to become part of algorithms around us without awareness. AI is not about AI. For #nonprofits, #foundations, #CSR teams its greatest value in unlocking broader conversations. Conversations, for instance, about how innovation - which I'd define as new approaches to solving problems - can be brought into organizations that are resource constrained to help drive more impact. For example, having a handle on your data isn't optional anymore! That's one positive I see in this new landscape.
