During her visit last week, President Rios-Ellis met local Stockton high school and community college students participating in the Health Careers Opportunities Program at our Stockton Campus. This six-week summer program is funded by an HCOP grant from HRSA in partnership with Touro University California. The program offers college credits, career preparation experience, hands-on healthcare activities and community health projects. ❤️💛🩺

The boundaries between segments hold tremendous potential, especially for both academic and CTE dual enrollment. Allowing this to be managed and tracked at the level of students and families, and schools and colleges is critical. However, without adequate software or personal technology these type of strategic and accessible dual enrollment options and pathways are only available to a tiny fraction of the school population and have to managed with adequate human resourcing, which is difficult in budget constrained times.
As I reflect on the wild ride that is ASU-GSV, I'm energized by the fact that "skills," "pathways," and "degrees" were mentioned together throughout the summit. To me, that signals that there is a growing commitment to delivering real value for students via strong pathways from education to career. We know that dual enrollment is often an important component of those pathways—that's why I'm excited to share our team's new learning deck. Check it out to learn about the history of dual enrollment, our hypothesis about what great dual enrollment programs look like, and the levers we have to make all dual enrollment programs great ones. Shoutout to Career Ladders Project, the Community College Research Center, and the Public Policy Institute of California for their partnership—as well as Bill Tucker and Sylvia Symonds, Ph.D. for their synthesis. https://lnkd.in/ddRxupij

We believe that building stronger, smoother, accelerated pathways between K-12 education, postsecondary education, and careers is not only necessary to grow our economy, but also to address inequality in our communities. Our work leading the #AccelerateED community is central to this mission. We wanted to know, what would it take for every high school student to have the opportunity to earn college credits without the financial burden? To complete an associate degree one year after high school? To gain valuable experience and career preparation in a field of interest during high school? And while we are excited to tell you all about this work, instead we think it’s better to hear directly from the students who are most impacted by it. Up first in our new student voice video series, meet Qamar Ayyoubi, a rising senior at Kettering Fairmont High School in Ohio and nursing pathway student, is earning college credits in high school toward a degree and high-demand career in healthcare: https://lnkd.in/g8wRcZZS

Yesterday was my first opportunity to attend the Illinois Education and Career Success Network annual conference. The theme - Awareness to Action - resonated throughout the day and left me feeling even more energized to create more equitable postsecondary pathways for young people. A few thoughts that are sticking with me: 1. “We’re asking students the wrong questions”. In a session focused on leveraging state frameworks like PaCE, I was validated when thinking about how important it is to put the idea of “what/who do you want to be…” in front of students versus leading advising conversations with thoughts simply about what college students want to attend. 2. “We need to shift the burden from the students to the system”. In multiple sessions, this thought came through. Simply by being a part of an unjust system means you have the proximity and power to play a role in fixing that system so that it better supports the students and families it is meant to serve. All of this has me even more excited to be a part of an organization like OneGoal that is focused on leading the movement to transform postsecondary advising and support. Onward!

Deputy Vice Chancellor @ Buckinghamshire New University | Higher Education Leadership. All views my own
Over the last week, I’ve chaired our promotion panels at Buckinghamshire New University. In many ways, it’s the most important meeting that we hold in universities. Not only do colleagues spend a great deal of time preparing, these panels pass judgement on careers, on achievements, on successes, on educational lives that demand so much. What stood out, what I’ve never experienced at other universities, is the seriousness, the gravity, with which we considered individual circumstances. We considered caring responsibilities, parenthood, illness, myriad other contexts that interrupted careers, with care, with compassion and with an understanding rare in the metric-heavy world of higher education. Most importantly, we attached *weight* to life-circumstances, counter to the normative patterns that reproduce normative promotions. All work histories are not the same. All lives are not the same. All interactions and intersections and interrelations between life and work are not the same. When we make these judgements, about careers, about promotions, about salaries, we need to remember that.

Proven background of enhancing student success through advising, relationship building, curriculum design, and teaching.

Twenty students from West Virginia high schools have been selected to participate in this year’s Datha and Gene Smith Fellowship program. The exclusive fellowship program was developed to assist first-generation college students with their transition from high school to college. Unlike scholarships, fellowships provide long-term support, rather than one-time financial disbursement. This cohort of 20 students is Fairmont State’s largest yet. To begin the process of college life, selected students will attend a summer bridge program. For five days in July, members of the cohort will live on Fairmont State’s campus and experience life as college students. This program eases the anxiety of the transition from high school to college through casual gatherings, complete tours of the campus, and ongoing assistance from advisors who are there to answer any questions. This year’s bridge program is set to run from July 6 through 11. “Our bridge program allows first-generation college students to obtain the information they need to be successful during their time at Fairmont State University,” said Justin Rader, Associate Director of Orientation and Transition Programs at Fairmont State.
