Crucifers, aka crops in the cabbage family, are under threat by cabbage root maggots. They feed on the roots of crucifers, potentially killing young plants or causing enough damage to root crops that they can’t be harvested. In the “Reduce risk strategies for cabbage maggot control” Cluster 4 research activity new management tools, mainly insecticides, and strategies for how to use those insecticides with non-insecticide tools, will be tested to help growers fight back against this pest. To date this spring progress has been made with the first trial of Brussels sprouts planted in a commercial grower’s field in Abbotsford, B.C. The field previously had recorded pressure from cabbage root maggots. The hope with this research activity is to provide growers across Canada with a rotational crop option to accompany other vegetable crops such as potatoes. Crucifers provide significant cash flow and in most areas of Canada, have been the first crops to start bringing in cash flow on a farm. #Cluster4 #AgriScience #HorticultureInnovation #SustainableAgriculture #FVGCimpact

Project Management and Marketing Executive for Protected Cultivation & Hydroponics Hi-tech Farm Development at Rise Hydroponics
#Protected_cultivation is a process of growing #crops in a controlled environment. This means that the temperature, humidity, light and such other factors can be regulated as per requirement of the crop. This assists in a healthier and larger produce. It is the #cultivation of high-value vegetables and other #horticultural crops in greenhouses – allows farmers to grow cash crops on small plots in marginal, water-deficient areas where traditional cropping is not viable. ------------- Follow me for more of each content!

Severe Hailstorms Hit Potato Crops in Southeast Buenos Aires #PotatoCrops #AgriculturalChallenges #ClimateImpact #WeatherDisruptions #FarmersStruggle #AgriculturalResilience In a surprising turn of events, the flourishing potato crops in the southeast of Buenos Aires, Argentina, faced a significant setback over the weekend. Powerful hailstorms, particularly in the Tandil region, left a trail of destruction, affecting not only crops intended for consumption but also crucial seed multiplication fields. Holey Bok Choy, anyone? Flea beetles made tiny holes in this bok choy. As the bok choy grows up, the holes grow with it. There’s nothing wrong with this product, but we can’t sell it because of the holes. Now this bok choy field serves as a “trap crop” for us. The flea beetles like it and will stay put. But if we chop up the field, the chopper will only displace the flea beetles and they will simply find a new home in a different crop. Since we can’t kill pests organically, we just have to let it happen. Insects like some crops more than others, so we plant trap crops in between varieties because the bugs are unlikely to cross over into the next row. Be honest, would you buy holy bok choy next time you’re at the store? #BokChoy #FleaBeetle #TrapCrop #Organic #Agriculture

This year, wet conditions have made growing #potatoes in the UK very challenging. Crops had restricted or reduced #rooting structure following a colder, late spring and slow emergence and so nutrient capture and efficiency was impacted. Nutrino Pro can be used as a highly efficient #nutrientsource and has proven to be a useful tool in dealing with this heavy rainfall and the potential loss of nitrogen. Read more about how Nutrino Pro supported a grower maintain his yield of ‘Markies’ despite 2023's extreme rainfall: https://lnkd.in/eQ5CACVS #scienceled #agronomydriven

I agree with your assertion! Much as the damages seem exacerbated during storage (postharvest), the preharvest conditions equally contribute greatly. This material by The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries (Uganda) below provides a useful tool for agricultural extension workers, grain traders, farmers, and food processing industries to manage the deadly fungal condition. https://lnkd.in/d5axwMud
Did you know that you can lose 100% of your crop in storage? Aflatoxins cause more than 25% destruction of the world's food crops post-harvest. Keep Your grain clean of mold in a cool, dry and well aerated space. #TheHomeOfBumperHarvests #Bwanashambawamjini#

I am interested in the application of modern breeding techniques in development of climate-resilient crop varieties. Engage me on how to apply science to boost the production for the small-scale crop growers of Africa.
This year I did two subsequent seasons of rain-fed greengrams (mungbean) and sorghum, respectively in semi-arid Tharaka, Kenya. We have been lucky to receive enough rain in the long season (and a lot of rain in the short season). The legumes did very well to give 1.5 t/ha. Now, the El Nino season is planted with Gadam sorghum variety and I am noticing patchiness in growth vigor, with a higher vigor in sections where there was some biochar. Interestingly, the last season's crop (greengrams) did not do well in the spots which had biochar. At farmer's level, there appears to be a differential response for biochar for the two crops. In the future, I would like to optimize the performance of the two crops by applying the missing nutrients for each crop under the biochar conditions. Pictures for the two crops are shown
