This week we are acknowledging Homelessness Week at Star to drive awareness of the impact of homelessness in our community. A big focus of this week is our Op Shop Fundraiser, with all proceeds raised going towards Sacred Heart Mission’s Women’s House. We are asking each student to donate two items of quality clothing, or one item of clothing and a warm blanket to support this initiative. These items are to be given to students' mentor teachers. We are aiming to conclude the donation drive on Monday July 29th. Alternatively you can donate directly to Sacred Heart Mission’s programs via their website: https://lnkd.in/gBmju-gY Domestic and family violence is the leading cause of homelessness for women, with 45% of all women and girls seeking assistance identifying family and domestic violence as a cause. In fact, 2 in 5 women (39%) have experienced violence since the age of 15. What these devastating statistics don’t tell us however, is how many women are slipping through service gaps. Since 2012-2023, the number of women and children experiencing homelessness has doubled. The Women’s House is a sanctuary for women in crisis. It is a safe space where they can share their experiences and receive person-centred, specific support.

We are overjoyed to share that, thanks to the extraordinary generosity of our community supporters, Pierogi Studios and doTERRAHealing Hands Foundation Australia and New Zealand (dHHFANZ), Juno haven't just reached but SMASHED their target to reopen the Rapid Response Clinic in 2024! The Rapid Response Clinic is a lifeline, an early intervention initiative serving as a drop-in clinic which connects women (trans and cis) and non-binary individuals with critical housing and financial support, significantly reducing the risk of homelessness. Our heartfelt gratitude to the donors for their incredible support and solidarity. Because of you, Juno will extend its reach to support more people at risk, offering the help they need before they face the full force of hardship. While celebrating this monumental achievement, we invite additional donations throughout December for Juno's other essential work so that they can continue providing tailored support to even more women, non-binary individuals, and families facing homelessness and family violence in 2024. As a proud Board member of Juno, this cause is close to my heart and an ever increasing area in need of support. Your donation can make a significant impact: - $25 could help purchase gifts or fund holiday activities for children who have been through a lot this year. - $50 could provide transport support to a family experiencing homelessness to attend housing inspections and access essential support services. - $150 could cover a night in emergency accommodation for someone who has who has nowhere else to go, often as a result of family violence. - $350 could purchase a laptop to support someone to re-engage in education or employment and build a better life for themselves and their children. Donate now to help Juno sustain essential services beyond 2023. Together, we can keep more women and non binary and their families out of homelessness for good. #Homelessness is a big topic of conversation in the greater Seattle area—and one that can be loaded with opinion and emotion. If you—like us here at Campion—believe that we need honest and empathetic conversation about #housing and homelessness, then we encourage you “donate your small talk” this holiday season. Donate Your Small Talk offers a way to educate and inspire empathy with friends/family/coworkers who are frustrated and sharing their frustration with you. This new campaign from We Are In will help you talk about homelessness in a clear, compassionate, and sensible way. For example: Your Uncle: All those homeless people downtown are why Seattle’s crime rates are so bad. It’s not safe there anymore. You: I hear your about safety. It’s a big concern for me, too. People who are homeless, though, are more likely to be the targets of crime, rather than the perpetrators. Crime is a real problem, but people experiencing homelessness is a separate issue. Homelessness is a serious challenge. We need to talk about it. Please repost to donate *your* small talk and tag three friends to help spread the word! Did you know that over 38,000 young people aged 15–24 years presented alone to a homelessness service in 2022–23? Of these young people, almost half experienced mental ill-health, and over one-third experienced domestic and family violence. Most of these young people needed short- or long-term accommodation, and most were turned away due to a lack of capacity. These statistics only scratch the surface of issues that young people experiencing homelessness face. To have statistics like this in a country like Australia is not acceptable; together, we can have a tangible impact, and now is the time to act. #wehavetodobetter #YHMD

You can start to make a difference today. Educate yourself on the issues and share what you’ve learned with your friends and family. Understand that people don’t choose to be homeless. Circumstances beyond their control, for a variety of reasons, have brought them to this way of life. If you’re comfortable, smile and say hi to the homeless person you often see on the corner, or on your way to work. Make eye contact if you can and say a few words to acknowledge and reaffirm their humanity. Most importantly, we can make a difference together. Please give the largest and most meaningful gift you can that reflects your values and your desire to join CUCS as part of the solution to homelessness. cucs.org/donate. #cucsnyc #homelessnyc #supportivehousing #makeadifferencedecember #transitionalhousing

I canceled Thanksgiving this year. Initially, my family frowned at the idea of missing their favorite turkey, stuffing, mac and cheese, and sweet potato pie. Instead, we bundled up and spent that day and the weekend that followed cooking and serving food to the hungry. On Thanksgiving day, we delivered meals directly to homes that requested them. I grew up here. Yet this delivery assignment took me to parts of my backyard I'd never seen. In the following days, we cooked and served 250 homeless at a local park near a large homeless encampment. I'm a physician. My day job is service. What more could I learn here? Well, I've "volunteered" before, but not quite like this, where we talked with and ate alongside those in need. What would my kids take away from this experience? It's too much for a LinkedIn post, but it can easily be summarised by saying we got more than we gave this Thanksgiving. The gratitude, the goodness of heart, the joy emanating from each person who needed our help was soul-shaking. I grew up in a household where sometimes the TV was off for a few days or the power was out on Thursday but back on Friday. It was feast or famine. The stories shared with us often involved one small thing, an illness or a job loss, that resulted in the current situation. It really can be any of us or anyone you know. The poverty rate among children saw a sizeable increase, more than doubling from 5.2% in 2021 to 12.4% last year, census data shows. Poverty and the lack of affordable housing are the primary causes of homelessness in families. How Many Children and Families Experience Homelessness? On a single night in January 2021: An estimated 161,070 people in families — or 51,000 family households — were identified as homeless. Approximately 17,337 people in families were living on the street, in a car, or in another place not meant for human habitation. In 2020, an estimated 470,000 people in 132,000 family households used an emergency shelter or a transitional housing program. Our contribution was trivial compared to the workers who do this day in and day out when there is no holiday in sight. Thank you to two outstanding Atlanta organizations, Hosea Helps and Food4Lives, for allowing us to join their mission this holiday. Sponsor a meal or sign up to volunteer through the websites below. Children age 12 and up are welcome for most activities. Family homelessness is preventable, with your help. We're wrapping up our annual peer-to-peer fundraising campaign. I set my goal at $7,500, and am just $1,200 short of that mark. Your tax-deductible contribution will ensure that asset-limited, income-constrained employed parents will have access to a financial safety-net, and that parents who are under-employed or unemployed will have access to the services they need to retain or regain housing. At Wellspring, our focus is on preventing homelessness. It's less expensive for donors and our government, less traumatic for children, and less costly to the employers for whom these parents work. Every dollar helps. Thank you for your contribution. https://lnkd.in/ggPEc_qK

The latest homelessness stats have been released and they paint a bleak picture. More children than ever are experiencing homelessness in England, including here in Greater Manchester. Too many young people are at critical stages of their young adulthood without the safety and security of a home. This disrupts learning, it disrupts relationships and it disrupts lives. We hope the new approaches that the new Government has tabled, especially their plans for housing, will provide some positive news in the months ahead, but as these figures show, there is a national crisis taking place. In the past five years, the Greater Manchester Mayor's Charity has been able to fund over 78,000 nights of accommodation in our A Bed Every Night scheme for those who would otherwise have been sleeping on our streets, but we must do more. Everyone has a human right to have shelter and to feel safe. No one should be without a home, and we must continue to provide as much support as possible to those made most vulnerable by our society. Every donation we receive is vital to achieving this goal, allowing us to share funding where it’s needed most across each of the ten boroughs of Greater Manchester. Businesses can help support through corporate donations or by installing one of our ‘Tap to Donate’ machines at till points. To help us, please donate today: https://buff.ly/3uZMvs8

Dear LinkedIn community: You’re probably well aware of the homelessness crisis in San Francisco, but you may not know how it affects young people specifically: ❕ Almost 14 percent of the youth experiencing #homelessness in San Francisco live in Bayview-Hunters Point. ‼️ African-Americans make up 38 percent of San Francisco's young and unhoused population, while constituting only 6 percent of the city's population. 🛑 The #1 barrier is San Francisco’s cost of living, especially sky-high rents and move-in costs. As sobering as these facts are, the youth homelessness crisis in Bayview-Hunters Point is solvable. 3rd Street Youth Center & Clinic has helped more than 600 youth get off the streets and the organization just launched the “Keys To The Future'' 🔑campaign to continue finding permanent homes for Bayview-Hunters Point's young and unhoused. https://lnkd.in/gZjeUbyV Between now and midnight on 12/31/23, the campaign aims to raise $125,000. Donations will go toward lowering the skyrocketing rents and move-in costs that have locked young people out of housing. If you share 3rd Street’s belief that every young person deserves a secure path to a brighter future, please join me in making a #GivingTuesday contribution to Keys To The Future. Thanks. 🙏🏿 Joi Jackson-Morgan, MPH José Angel Rodríguez, MA Laura Fallon Vanessa Eng Craig Rouskey Michael H. Savage Jackie Relyea
