This week, two legendary Bolivian founders-turned-investors had a chat for Brazil Journal and one thing was extra clear: Martin Escobari (General Atlantic) and Marcelo Claure (Claure Group, ex-Softbank) have PhDs in volatility. Like most LatAm entrepreneurs, we must say. But hey… a smooth sea never made a skilled sailor, right? 🌊 Having gone through many waves and tides, they both remain optimistic about startups in the region. In Martin’s words: “Today is the hangover for Latin America. I keep telling entrepreneurs that the best opportunities happen after the correction, like right now – through consolidation, through reimagining industries. So I actually think despite the difficulties in fundraising, the next 3-4 years for LatAm are very, very interesting.” LatAm’s resilience and ability to navigate unpredictable scenarios is, for lack of a better term, world-class. Not that we have a choice, but embracing the chaos can make us better problem-solvers and turn complexity into our moat. So if you’re feeling dizzy, remember: the hangover cure is within us. 🤒💪

Lack of access to resources, funding and capital in the very early stages of start ups is a critical issue. However there is a gap also with respect to an organization ready to scale and needs the funds to do so. Personally speaking, I have come across more entrepreneurs who are putting aside their dreams, taking on full time jobs because of these very reasons. We definitely need more accelerator programs and similar alternatives that can provide entrepreneurs with the tools, resources, mentors and access to funding opportunities that is needed.
