The largest ever genetic study of age of #puberty in girls is finally out in Nature Portfolio Nature Genetics & we find some really interesting stuff! 💡 It's a numbers game 🔢 We analysed more then 800,000 women and identified >1,000 gene variants which affect the time when one enters puberty. A collaborative work or not?? 🤝 Puberty and menopause might send signals to each other when to 'kick in'! It is believed that the beginning (#puberty) and end (#menopause) of reproductive life are controlled by very different biological mechanisms. Well...we find #mechanisms that impact both timing of puberty and menopause - ovarian #reserve (number of eggs in your ovary), established when you were a fetus, might send signals to trigger puberty. Is this going to give us any insights into how we can 'influence' menopause timing via puberty? Could be! 🍔 Higher #BMI and earlier puberty? We find genetic signals that have primary effects on puberty timing and/or early #weight gain. Grateful that I was part of this work during my PhD at University of Cambridge! What an important study. I wonder Stasa Stankovic if you are planning to initiate a similar study for the offset of menopause, how these two spans #puberty and #menopause onset correlate to the reproductive health. Or is such second study exist already? Excited to continue tracking your work and glad you are affiliated with Cercle 🙏

I think that the link between puberty and menopause could help us understand and influence reproductive health. The connection between higher BMI and earlier puberty shows how genetics affect our growth. Kudos to all the researchers involved!
