🚀 Here's what I learnt from the FemTech Lab Decoding the Future of Women conference... 💡 Broadening the Scope of Women's Health: Women's health is much more than reproductive health. The uterus, ovaries, vagina, and vulva serve many purposes beyond reproduction. Issues disproportionately affecting women are not solely linked to our reproductive organs. As Eva T. Tarasova pointed out, 80% of those affected by autoimmune conditions are women. We need to expand our horizons and explore broader opportunities within femtech. 🏥 Focusing on Healthspan, Not Just Lifespan: It's not just about how long we live, but how long we live in good health. Extending #healthspan requires effective disease prevention, but we need more research and knowledge in this area. As Jennifer Garrison poignantly stated, “what we fund dictates what we know.” Women's health has been and continues to be underfunded. 🌐 Enhancing Accessibility and Usability: Ensuring a product's success requires a strong focus on #accessibility and #usability. This was a recurrent theme throughout the conference. 📚 Balancing AI with Education: While AI offers numerous opportunities, let's not run before we can walk. We must focus on educating our consumers first and foremost. As Dr Helen O'Neill linked back to reproductive technology, we need to place more emphasis on #education around the preconception journey. 👩⚕️ Collaborating with Clinicians: Close collaboration with clinicians is essential to understand NHS pathways and services, provide easy-to-digest information for consumers, and ensure products are appropriate for their purpose. Dr Orlanda A. highlighted that Femtech companies need to involve clinicians from the start. 🔗 Integration into NHS Pathways: For products such as apps to be truly successful and impactful, integration into NHS pathways and services is crucial. Konrad Dobschuetz emphasized this point. In summary, the FemTech Lab Decoding the Future of Women conference highlighted the importance of a #holistic approach to women's health, the need for increased research and funding, and the critical role of integration and education. #endometriosis impacts approximately 190 million women and girls of reproductive age, yet the path to diagnosis is often difficult, invasive and costly, taking an average 6.4 years. On Tuesday night, we heard from pioneering leaders in this space at the University of Adelaide Research Tuesday spotlight, who are working on incredible innovations - feeling honoured having both Dr Jodie Avery, BA BAppSc (Med Rad) MPH PhD and Professor Louise Hull from the Imagendo group as supervisors on my masters research, looking at the femtech landscape, and how there is immense clinical need for women’s health research and technology development, yet barriers continue to stifle innovation. We often get asked why there hasn't been more innovation around incontinence care. After all, this category represents a $20 billion market opportunity with a CAGR of 9%, outpacing growth in both baby care and feminine hygiene. Sometimes, this question comes from a place of genuine curiosity, of wanting to learn and understand more about the condition, the industry, the larger consumer space. But more often than not, it seems to come from a place of skepticism. Some seem to be of the view that if more innovation was truly needed, it would have happened long ago. Others struggle to understand the degree of suffering that those living with incontinence endure as they seek to find better solutions. Lyndsey Harper, MD, FACOG, IF absolutely nails it here. As with so many other health conditions women navigate, it is as if the proverbial "we" found something "good enough" and just stopped there -- despite the fact that market research shows nearly 80% of women are unhappy with the current products they are using to manage their bladder leaks. To be clear, urinary incontinence is not unique to women. It is absolutely a condition that men experience as well, and in this way, is distinct from things like endometriosis, PCOS, maternal health, period care and other conditions that are uniquely experienced by women. However, it is no coincidence that nearly 80% of the population that is impacted by urinary incontinence are women. I would be willing to bet that if it were 1-in-2 adult men rather than 1-in-2 adult women living with UI (as the Mayo Clinic reports), we would have seen vastly more innovation in this category. If we want to rebuild women's health in the way that the world deserves, startups and HCPs have to work together. Innovation in women's health is not an option, it is an imperative. I sat in a room full of women's health experts, femtech founders and people who cared deeply about the advancement of women's health yesterday... Here's what I learned and walked away with 👇 Some stats that I couldn't erase from my brain: ✨ 60 million women are living with some sort of heart disease and it is the #1 killer of women (it accounts for 1 in 5 female deaths each year) ✨60-70% of all unpaid caregivers looking after someone they love with dementia are women -- caregivers also have an elevated risk of being diagnosed with dementia themselves ✨50% of mothers have trouble with their babies suckling or latching , 44% of mothers have the fear of insufficient milk supply production, Some femtech that is changing the game: Veera has designed a revolutionary breast pump that allows women to pump AND feed their baby at the same time. Dionysus Digital Health is doing fascinating work in maternal mental health. Anticipating postpartum depression (PPD) in women by scanning epigenetic biomarkers in order to predict a woman's risk in developing PPD after giving birth. Aspivix developed Carevix, a next-gen suction based cervical device that demonstrated how they could provide a better and more comfortable IUD procedure and decrease the amount of bleeding and pain associated with the procedure.
