WHY IS STUDENT ENGAGEMENT IMPORTANT? There is power behind the voice. Meaningful student involvement is the process of engaging students as partners in every facet of college for the purpose of strengthening their commitment to education, community & democracy.... Student engagement is not just about acquiring knowledge; its a transformative journey that shapes their future. Engaging students in this preparation process is crucial for their personal growth, academic success, and overall well-being. As we walk along this journey, provide students with a strong foundation for success, both academically and personally. As one author described it, "The true strength in our position as student advocates lies in the collaboration and partnership with student learners not in the knowledge of one expert." #browardcollege #BCCentralsl #studentsuccess #studentretention #generationrestoration #highereducation

What’s involved in #studentsuccess in college? Are we operating with outdated ideas about what students and educators need to do? Students used to ask: 📚 What do I have to read? 📜 Will this be on the test? ➕ Can I get extra credit? ⏲ Do you accept late work? 🈴 How can I get an A (or a C)? But now educators are just ask likely to hear: 💻 My kids were playing with my computer, and I lost my paper. Can I have an extension? 👩⚕️ I know my assignment was due last night, but I had to go in to work unexpectedly. Will you take it late? 💲 If I drop this class, I lose my financial aid. Can you help me catch up on three weeks of assignments? 😥 There’s been a huge health (or mental health) crisis in my family and I was afraid to tell you. Can you help and support me? Mental health is central to student concerns, AND they think their professors should shoulder a large share of the burden for helping them to monitor and maintain good mental health. (Check out the articles of Colleen Flaherty https://lnkd.in/gM9j_WRE for more). It might be time to reexamine our definition of success in higher education. Are we more focused on learning or credentials? Do the rules serve a purpose?
