The third round of #Euro2024 has shown, if there was ever any doubt, that the competition's format is flawed. Too many matches are decided even before being played (e.g., Slovakia-Romania) based on whether it benefits the teams needing to advance. Teams that win their first two matches are already certain of reaching the Round of 16 and play with their "B team" affecting the group stage's regularity. Fortunately, on this last day, Spain has proven to be so strong that they could easily win even with their “reserves”. Let's hope UEFA reconsiders and comes up with a smarter system. In any case, the games were played on the ground, and the award for the best star of the third round went to Spain's Dani Olmo, who won with a #PEI (Player Evaluation Index) of 517, much lower than the winners of the first two rounds. Excellent performance by Italian Riccardo Calafiori, while Czech Soucek and Austrian Sabitzer (already present in the second round rankings) and Dutch Gakpo (present in the first round) confirmed their standings. A lot is changing in football at the moment, and at a very rapid pace. The economic powerhouses from the Middle East can be seen trying to make their own individual standing stronger in the global geopolitics arena by using the game of football as a positive projection of their political narratives. Their agenda comes with a more ambitious motive of challenging European, or in a wider context, traditional Western dominance in sports by either buying their way into hosting the pinnacle of sports events or launching their leagues of their own in competition to current front-runners. The recent developments in the bitter saga between the PGA tour and the LIV tour is one glaring example. However, FIFA's persistent attempts to expand the previously underwhelming Club World Cup to an intensified and longer 32-team event further strengthens the point that sports are no longer the platform for Western nations to display their long-standing dominance over Eastern nations. Although the global governing body plans to host the first edition in 2025 in the USA to test the host venues for the 2026 World Cup, it remains to be seen how players, coaches, and other stakeholders respond to the added fixture burden to the already saturated football calendar.
