Two weeks ago I was invited by the European Environmental Bureau and the European Fossil Free Steel Network hosted by E3G to comment on the Low Emissions Steel Standard (LESS). Many discussions center around the so called "Sliding Scale". The question remains: Hot or Schrott? ➡ The collection rate for steel is generally around 90 percent. -> The potential of scrap steel must be exploited, but it’s limited. Favoring the primary route protects scrap steel producers from scrap price inflation. ➡ The availability of scrap is in short supply. -> Scrap protectionism is not a globally just transformation strategy! 🌐 Germanwatch e.V. comments: LESS is ambitious and a first (!) step towards creating green lead markets! But: For LESS becoming a success, it needs some policy instruments that pulls for demand for LESS certified steel. We demand green public procurement instruments on federal level for quality- and construction steel, using LESS with growing ambitions from 2026 on.

Exciting news from a recent WRI study that aligns with our vision at #NewEuropeanBauhaus. The study finds that increasing wood harvest for #construction and other timber materials would lead to greater carbon losses from forests than the gains achieved from material substitution. 👉 https://lnkd.in/dxT4MWEf It also highlights the declining emissions from #concrete and steel due to numerous opportunities for reducing their emissions. This suggests that using wood for construction could be less beneficial than we thought. In a bid to combat global overcapacity and address climate change, the European Union and the United States began negotiations in October 2021 for the Global Arrangement on Sustainable Steel and Aluminium (GASSA). The aim was to encourage environmentally friendly steel production and reduce trade in high-carbon steel and aluminum. While there was optimism that an agreement would be reached, both sides have extended their negotiations through the end of 2023 after failing to find common ground on key issues.
