With smallholder farmers constituting 70% of farmers and responsibe for 80% of our agricultural productivity, access to technology, research, improved seeds and generally new ways of doing things via extension services is the way to go. It is mathematically way easier to finance extension services than to try to turn everyone into a green house farmer or large scale farmer.

Throwback: MECHANIZED: Transforming Africa’s Agriculture Value Chains! Governments and the private sector need to promote mechanization in each segment of the value chain and at scale. This will leverage the potential of the agriculture sector to drive growth and generate employment, particularly in rural economies. Recommendations to accelerate mechanization along the agriculture value chain: 1. Elevate national agricultural mechanization investment strategies to a top priority within countries’ national agriculture investment plans. 2. Design socially and politically sustainable mechanization pathways. 3. Prioritize mechanization along the agriculture value chain. 4. Investments in supportive infrastructure. 5. Create a conducive business and services environment. 6. Develop an African agricultural machinery industry. 7. Empower smallholder farmers’ and women’s groups. 🔵 On 16 April 2024, the Independent Office of Evaluation of IFAD (IOE), in collaboration with the Government of Türkiye and IFAD’s Near East, North Africa, Europe and Central Asia Division, organized a national workshop for the #Türkiye Country Strategy and Programme Evaluation, as a final step in the evaluation process. The event was a forum to present the main findings emerging from the report and to discuss opportunities and challenges for the IFAD-Government partnership in the future. The evaluation found that the strategic theme of inclusive rural resilience of smallholders’ livelihoods in remote upland areas was relevant, as well as the development approaches applied by the programme to address rural poverty in geographically remote and marginalized areas. IFAD-supported programme contributed to economic diversification, increased agricultural productivity and production in both crop and livestock production, as well as more resilient agricultural ecosystems. For the future, the evaluation recommended to leverage the strategic partnership between IFAD and the Government, beyond portfolio oversight, to foster engagement on policy matters and effective knowledge management for greater scaling up of results. The report also emphasized the need of strengthening the programmatic approach in the delivery of IFAD’s support, and fostering the learning culture, to address persistent implementation challenges. 🔎 More information and materials: bit.ly/4ahTmNC 📰 News item: bit.ly/449BW3y
