We are extremely proud of the work we did together at GPA to develop an autonomous community HUB School committed to racial equity, gender diversity, restorative practices, family and community partnerships, innovation, and excellence. We learned that some educators in my building went behind our backs trying to dismantle the extensive work we were doing around equity and inclusion calling our efforts "anti-white". The felt uncomfortable with our discussions about dismantling white supremacy culture and promoting gender inclusive practices. They were threatened by our work elevating the voices of our immigrant families. And, the sad reality, they won. What we developed over three decades centering our students and families is now a school without a heart.  Our principal and five of our HUB team members have either resigned or have been pushed out, losing all of the critical people who made our model thrive. Sadly, the real victims in all of this are our children and families. What happened to our students and families this year should not be acceptable to anyone, but particularly to those who are in power who remained silent and let this happen. I asked a lawyer/advocate recently, "What it is going to take to change our public education system to better serve our students?" He responded saying, "it is going to take a movement. We are creating a first of its kind self-sustaining paradigm for adults with autism where work and live exist on equal pillars. Where opportunities, services and support are aligned to unlock individual potential and maximize independence. We have a big vision for what we are going to accomplish by creating a home for our kids with 500 residents and a mission to create 5000 jobs. These adults need support in housing, life skills and meaningful employment. We will be leveraging our teams’ decades of experience in entrepreneurship, tech and hospitality industries to not only create meaningful jobs, but to build profitable businesses for our community of under-employed adults to work at and then roll those profits from the work side to the housing and services side to minimize the cost for each family. Our world needs a huge step change in solutions to support the epidemic of adults who have or are about to age out of the system in the next few years. To change the world, we are architecting Jonathan’s Landing 100% open source, leveraging an open innovation model with the intention of sharing everything we create and learn for free.
