Reflections on the Women Automotive Network Europe 2023 Summit 🎤 Looking back at last years Europe Summit, the feedback has been truly inspiring. It reinforces the significance of our efforts to support and uplift women in the automotive industry, particularly in leadership roles. Melanie Schuttenberg, Vice President at Flex, noted: "It is important to support Women in Automotive as we have not yet achieved an equal share, especially in management positions. Until this is a reality, we must continue to speak up." Andrea Seidel, Director of IT Infrastructure at Daimler Truck AG, commented on the atmosphere: "It’s hard to describe the special kind of energy and vibe present from the start of the conference. I met so many great, interesting, and powerful women." WOMEN ARE 17% MORE LIKELY TO DIE IN A CAR ACCIDENT AND A WHOPPING 73% MORE LIKELY TO BE INJURED, according to US research data. To women in automotive: when you drive your car, does the seat belt slip up from your hips and go over your lower stomach instead? Are the head restraints in the wrong place? Does the seat belt cross your neck even if on the lowest notch? Does the seat belt carve between your boobs? Can you not adjust the seat height high enough? Do the occupant sensors think you’re not in the seat? This is because the industry uses the crash test dummy of a small man rather than one designed to emulate the female body. Male crash test dummies were designed for the safety of pilots in the early 20th century - a largely male population. They were then applied in automotive - an almost gender balanced population back in the 70s, and definitely balanced today. The men in charge saw no reason to have a different approach for women. If we had gender-balanced diverse teams of engineers, OEM boards, regulators and NCAP officials I believe this would not be happening. It is not acceptable to allow a woman to be at greater risk than men, yet sex disaggregated data is only recently being explored. Fair play to Volvo Cars for taking action and now using an accurate female crash test dummy. We need more women to be in positions of influence in automotive, and we need to invest in them and the female customer - it will save lives. We need to stop defaulting to the male version of a customer or employee and recognise females as well. Join our InspIring Conversation to explore this further👇.

There are some great initiatives, like the Automotive 30% Club motoring towards its ‘30 by 30’ goal, having filled 27% of key leadership and decision-making roles with women.    “However, in workshops and roles of a technical capacity, the gender imbalance is still prominent. There is still a lot of work that needs to be done to overcome the industry stereotypes to improve this imbalance.    “In Brembo, where over 15,000 people worldwide contribute to the company’s success, embracing diversity is not just a value but a vital strength. Brembo is committed to promoting an inclusive environment capable of supporting a sense of belonging. Women Automotive Network asked about my advice to women in the automotive industry. Here's what I think (in a little more detail than in the pictured quote): Considering how male-dominated the sector still is, my number one advice would be not to normalize any non-inclusive structures and behaviors but to call them out actively. That can be very hard, especially for younger women, people of color, and members of other marginalized groups, so my second piece of advice would be to focus very strongly on building a strong and supportive professional network, to make sure you have allies/accomplices within and beyond your company. Automotive is already a pretty amazing industry, and I am convinced it will be a lot more attractive still once it is more representative of our societal makeup. And speaking of "strong and supportive professional network", that's of course exactly what #WomenAutomotiveNetwork is. Automechanika Birmingham and Women Automotive Network will jointly host a free in-person networking drinks reception on Thursday 7 March. The event welcomes all automotive professionals and targets the creation of a support network for women in the industry. The event recognises the need to plug the current skills shortage, showcasing a progressive industry. Forecasts suggest that there will be a significant shortfall in the skills needed to service an evolving car parc, particularly technicians qualified to work safely and competently on electric vehicles. Women remain underrepresented in the sector, with around 19 per cent of roles in the automotive supply chain filled by female workers. https://lnkd.in/duzxdh26
