It’s Thursday, so throwing it back to honor what was once my favorite day of the week - Bowling night. In college, we rolled every Thursday for three years. Take that for a liberal arts education! I could’ve told you from experience that bowlers over-index in beer consumption, but here are some numbers on the bowling participant to back it up: 🎳 Bowlers are beer drinkers - 54% consume beer on a monthly basis, which is 40% more than the average U.S. adult (21+). 🎳 Bowlers prefer domestic beer; US beer brands rank first among bowlers alcoholic beverage of choice. 🎳 Bowlers like to party - they are 2x more likely to go to bars or clubs than the average US adult 21+. There are hundreds of Beer Competitions in the World. They differ by their size but also by their rules, their adherence or not to beer category definitions, the number of beers that each brewery can submit, the qualifications of the judges. Some are National, some welcome the world. There are 2 take away for participant: - Visibility (Attention) and Praise - when awarded - Feed Back to elevate their quality - when not awarded Now there's one thing that keeps the top world beer competitions apart from most other ones. There are lots of beers in competition but there is only 1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze per category. Just like the Olympic of beer, 3 winners on the podium. Bellow is a map of the top 10 beer competitions in my opinion! Be on the look for these logo's on your beer selection as they really mean something!

Instead of talking what doest mean the Winner Label of a certain category etc. on the beer bottle, better check some facts: very few competitions, very different rules.

Why are we posting data like this as if it's in any way real or valid? This article is (probably AI generated) nonsense - If the BevAlch industry wants to get better at its job then its leaders need to stop spreading misinformation and false talking points to those that take their word as credible. The concept that Miller Genuine Draft would rank higher than Modelo Especial is insulting to anyone with a basic grasp of valid research or statistics. The idea that Modelo is outside the top 10 equally so. Number 56 on this list is an entirely mislabeled brewery in VT that is both not notable in craft and has never distributed its products outside of the state - that company is currently for sale on the open market for $2m. Sierra is entirely omitted, while Fat Tire shows up and Voodoo does not? We can do so, so much better than this. This isn't an isolated incident to Rodney or his company, nor is it meant to be a personal callout. This post is just a symptom of an industry wide problem, and if we want to improve it needs to be called out at large. Also, Yahoo, do better.

The NCAA Men’s & Women’s Basketball Tournaments brought a lot of excitement to Raleigh, North Carolina. As a craft beer enthusiast, I noticed that breweries like New Belgium Brewing, Wicked Weed Brewing, and R&D Brewing were big winners during the event. This success may be specific to the Raleigh market, but it applies to larger markets as well. Having beer on tap in the right places and keeping it in stock with wholesalers was crucial in March. These two factors helped boost sales for these breweries in the North Carolina market, elevating their H1 2024 numbers and adding to the growth they were already experiencing in Q1 2024. However, not all craft breweries were successful during the tournament. Some missed the boat by not timing their promotions in the on-premise and off-premise to activate craft beer around the NCAA events. Craft beer consumers watch sports while drinking beer, so having out-of-stocks or no representation in the on-premise could be another reason why craft breweries are starting 2024 down 25%.

Woah, I hear the reactions to Homebrewcon being put on "Hiatus". My own take? Love the move. Put aside the financial realities, declining attendance, and simple need and consider where the GABF came from; the AHA and homebrewing. "The Great American Beer Festival got its start in 1982 as just a part of the American Homebrewers Association‘s fourth annual conference. If the name is any indication, however, founder Charlie Papazian had grander ambitions for this remarkable event." The roots of beer as we know it today, can be directly drawn back to the AHA, the early days of GABF, Charlie P., and so many other pioneers like him. Beer was beer, however it came about. That symbiotic approach paid dividends. So I applaud the Brewers Association on this decision. I understand how it may feel to many, but right now, we need to bring everyone under the same tent; from homebrewers to pro-brewers, from 5-gallon batches to larger industrial production, from homebrew to macro. Power in numbers, strength in solidarity. Beer is changing in front of our eyes, and we all need to adapt to find a new foundation and perhaps tap back into the mindsets of those folks in the late 70's and early 80's. Since we’re in May, the three-day weekend known for the Monaco Grand Prix, the Indianapolis 500 🏁, the Coca-Cola 600 NASCAR Race, and Memorial Day 🇺🇸 Weekend — the unofficial kickoff to Summer near month’s end — you’ll start seeing TONS of Ads and promos around the 10th of May. I can’t wait🍻! If you missed this post yesterday, I thought I’d share it again as we head into the weekend … Since Craft Beer is only 13.3% of the U.S. beer market according to the Brewers Association, with Import’s share at 23.2%, other Domestic beer is 63.6% share — and the math reported in the article below really doesn’t matter. But let’s not quibble. The floodgates are about to open. There’s going to be a boatload of beer sold and gulped between the last weekend of May and Labor Day weekend and the best Craft Beer can hope for is about 10% share. Yet these are percentages — volumes will actually grow substantially. And that’s a great thing.
