Mandy Matthews was so awesome to chat with on episode 15 of the Rural Exchange REAL OPTIMISM Podcast. Mandy is a stockman on WA live sheep export boats. A kiwi farm girl who fell in love with Australia. Her passion for farming and connecting people with food is infectious. In this podcast we talk about: 🚢 A day in the life of a stockman on the live sheep export boats, 4am starts but you get to eat with the captain of the ship 👨✈️ 🙌 Shared values and constructive converstations with those who have questions 🌏 Different cultures working together to support food security 🥩 Our connection to our food, or at times lack of it 👨⚖️ The regulation that keeps standards high for humans and animals, including independant auditors in market. In this snippet Mandy talks through the cultural connection to food held in the middle east, there is no waste, the entire animal will be utilised by the family. To some, this may seem confronting, but while we frequently discuss reducing food waste and addressing hunger, we can be quick to judge those who live by these principles as part of their cultural identity. It was a massive privlidge learning from Mandy and Dr Holly Ludeman (who we refer to often in the podcast). Great humans with a huge passion for rural communities and progress. From an outsiders perspecitve, live sheep export from Western Australia felt like a political game, where opinions overshadowed practical experience and understanding. No politicians are ever harmed in the making of these games.  Unfortunately, it's the communities that are hurt. The Livestock Collective Keep The Sheep Has this changed my perspective on the reinstatement of live exports from NZ? Nope not at all...it is not comparible to WA situation (other than the political games part 😉).
