I recently watched an interview with Helen Steers from Pantheon International on the benefits of owning private equity. It's fascinating how their approach to investing in mature, fast-growing companies has led to 12% annualised growth since 1987. We've been warning for years on The Evidence-Based Investor that the headlong rush into private equity could end in tears. Academics like Ludovic Phalippou who pointed out the risks involved, and the lack of transparency on fees and performance, were shouted down. A new report says the market has "stalled". Deal value and deal count have fallen 60 percent and 35 percent, respectively, from their peaks in 2021. Exit value is down 66 percent, and the number of funds closing is off by nearly 55 percent. But is it more serious than that?
