What is the attitude of the Church toward the sick? Having received from the Lord the charge to heal the sick, the Church strives to carry it out by taking care of the sick and accompanying them with her prayer of intercession. Above all, the Church possesses a sacrament specifically intended for the benefit of the sick. This sacrament was instituted by Christ and is attested by Saint James. "Is anyone among you sick? Let him call in the presbyters of the Church and let them pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord" (James 5:14-15). Further reading: CCC 1506-1513, 1526-1527

Reflect Today’s reading refers to the earth as the LORD’s footstool in a verse also quoted by the first Christian martyr, Stephen, in Acts 7:49. What does this image suggest to you about God and God’s relationship to creation? (The “house” in verse 1 refers to the Temple in Jerusalem, which was being rebuilt.) According to verse 2, with whom is the LORD pleased? Reread verses 10–14. How is the restoration of Jerusalem described? In what ways do your worship practices demonstrate your faithfulness and trust in God? For what will you rejoice today?

In celebration of the Advent season, today's word from the Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words is "ἐλπίζω" which means “to hope.” In several places, NT writers quote OT passages about hoping in the Lord, which means trusting in the Lord (Mt. 12:21; Rom. 15:12) Hope is directed toward the future. The ultimate focus of Christian hope is the return of Jesus Christ (Tit. 2:13), the resurrection from the dead (Acts 23:6), God’s ultimate salvation of his people, and the resultant eternal life in a restored creation (Rom. 8:20–21; Gal. 5:5). What are the essential elements of the sacrament of Reconciliation? The essential elements are two: the acts of the penitent who comes to repentance through the action of the Holy Spirit, and the absolution of the priest who in the name of Christ grants forgiveness and determines the ways of making satisfaction.
