So, for the second straight year, I have participated in Dry January and while it was easier this time, the benefits seem to have diminished. I still slept longer and better. I spent more time reading and less time watching TV. I did not, however, lose weight like I did last time. I attribute this to two things; I found a Non-Alcoholic beer I actually enjoyed (maybe a little too much) and the cold weather put a damper on my time spent outdoors exercising. Having said that, like most people I know, it is important for me to set personal goals and accomplish them. I am glad to have checked this box and will certainly consider doing it again. Frankly, I’m an “all or nothing” guy when it comes to quitting anything. While others opted for “Damp January,” I know that’s not how I roll. And, knowing yourself and your motivations are the keys to reaching any goal. Ironically, I have never liked setting career goals, especially when I am not in control of all the variables. My career goal is always the same. Do the best I can (for my company and my clients) and, ideally, do it better than anybody else. You may say, “Without making a plan, you’re planning to fail” and that is a legitimate concern, but consider this, everywhere I’ve worked for the past 30 years, I have been the top revenue producer. Not only that, my department has almost always hit its goal. That second part is as important as the first. If I am succeeding and my department is not, that reflects on me as a seasoned sales veteran. The key to any department’s success is threefold: opportunity, leadership, and teamwork. Mentoring junior salespeople and support staff is a huge part of why I enjoy my work. At WDAV Classical Public Radio, that opportunity has not really existed, in part because my sales partner, Jon "JB" Barcelo, is even more experienced than I am and is every bit as successful as I have been. He may very well be the best sales partner I’ve ever had. We have never once quibbled over an account. We help each other with ideas and leads. If one of us runs into a personal chemistry issue with a prospect, we are glad to work out a swap. And, those swaps have worked out to be mutually beneficial on several occasions. Well, all that is about to change because JB is retiring. If you have successfully sold media before and understand the Charlotte market, I encourage you to apply. The penny dropped 23 years ago when I moved to our corporate head office. I joined a team implementing a new operating system for the business. A huge project. The project had been underway for at least a year when I joined the team. The week I joined, we were asked to show the wider business what the new operating system looked like. Just a taste - it was far from complete and ready for use. Our little project team of five had to present our part of the system. The team leader gathered us in a room and asked, "Who wants to present?" I did. I knew no one else was going to volunteer and if the team leader had to call a meeting to ask the question, I knew it wasn't going to be her. So, I said, "I'll do it." I wasn't confident in what our part of the system did, but I soon learned to master the necessary to present what needed presenting. And it went well. Being prepared to be upfront is the ultimate career flex. #beingupfront #career #knowledgework  

How can I be booted out, on a day like this? What does life have in its confers for me now? Why today, after ten solid years of dedication? It feels like a nightmare Can I be woken up? One minute ago, I gave my all, And the next, I'm chased out like a stranger. Ten years of hard work, blood, sweat, and tears, All down the drain? And for what? So they can promote Janny, someone I mentored and helped grow, to Assistant Director? It's a slap in the face. I was there before Janny, six years before her. I remembered the CEO praising me as a valuable asset. But now, I'm nothing. No regard for my years of toil, no consideration for my dedication. Just a cold, harsh dismissal. And the worst part? I am the only one who stayed, While Jade and even Kings left. I am Legite, Legite is I. But now, it feels like they have sucked the life out of me and spat me out! All for what? I refused the feathers in my cap could not raise it above the bar. But I stayed loyal, Never ran off, No stuttering on the phone No applications. Just sweat and blood, And now, I have been sent to the abyss. ******************************************* Note the moral: In the world of work, we are not just employees, we are the heartbeat of the organization. Employers crave individuals who embody passion, discipline, dedication, and excellence. However, our value is not measured by the number of years we have spent, but by the worth we bring to the table. This worth not only benefits the company but also ourselves, even after we move on to new opportunities. It’s my birthday today. And as I contemplate another year around the sun, I’ve been reflecting on my career so far. The last year has been full of ups and downs, though I’m pleased to say right now is a massive high. I’ve never felt more energized and optimistic about my work and the trajectory of our business (shameless plug: we’re hiring if you’re thinking about your next chapter). I’ve learned a lot at Edelman and wanted to share a few guiding principles that have crystallized for me over the years. - Mental and emotional energy is finite. Use wisely and expend only on the things that really matter. Figuring out what really matters is a forever WIP. Pro tip: many of the things that consume this energy at work don’t actually matter. - Bad news should travel twice as fast as good news (h/t Mario J. Cordeiro). Get ahead of it as quickly as possible. Of course, you want everyone to know about the wins. But when something goes wrong (and something will go wrong), you need your support network to problem solve with you. The faster you start this, the better off you will be. - This is a relationship business. You have to really like people (and different kinds of people) to do well in a client or people management role. Great work only occurs when you have the trust of your clients. This is a team sport and if your clients (not to mention your actual team) don’t feel like they can trust your judgement, you will never earn the permission to take risks and put something out into the world that is truly ground-breaking. - We spend a lot of time at work. Find a place full of people that are smart, driven, fun and kind - and don't take it for granted.

Thought for the day: It's been a while.... because it's been busy! I took the time to sit last night and think about everyone that I have the benefit of working with and why I was determined to work here! Let's be fair, we have all trundled through Glassdoor when looking for our next venture, cringing because we have applied for the "low star" employee rated company - actually, we have all fallen for that trap. So why here?.... The team that care so much about getting it right for the business that we all work exceptionally hard and often mental hours, to get it done? And when I say we... I mean we! I have never come across anyone at 6sense who has said they can't help! - the worst is that they can't help right that second. But yet guaranteed they are offering help within the space of 4 or 5 days. And that's the secret to success. That's why we are successful - there is a magic potion: 1. The employees care 2. Everyone helps each other out 3. When things get tough, we battle through the storm - notice each other/ remember we are human 4. We believe in what we do, and aren't afraid to do what we believe 5. We imagine where not just we but everyone else is going to be in 3 months/ 6 months/ a year So as we approach FY'25 I just want to say - we did it before, we did it again and we do it better every year. Sooo, the next step in understanding those people in your expanding team, is what ...... Figure out why they are there... I mean, why are they in your team and not somewhere else... (It's probably not that you've enticed them with big bucks !) Why did they leave their last jobs... What does their ideal day or month look like... So how do you find this out ? - Surprisingly easy, you talk to them - hold regular monthly 1 to 1s, lasting one consultation in length (so you can easily fit them into your day). Ask them how they like to be shown appreciation - are they a small gifts person, do they value it when you do something for them (eg. see an extra cons when they are behind), or do they appreciate you taking 15 mins out of your busy day to listen to them. Perhaps they are at a stage in their career when learning new things and going on conferences is what they want, or do they aspire to certification, or is it important that they work in a harmonious environment where the team just 'gets on with things'. Then use this information (I have to record it somewhere when my brain gets full) to help make their job more fulfilling, which has been shown time and time again, to be one of the top things that that keeps the team engaged (they stay longer, earn more money for the practice, mentor other people better, etc).

Wow, 6 years at Bright Network! Where does the time go? 🎉 In that time, so much has changed, and I’m grateful for every moment. Here’s a quick trip down memory lane: - Bright Network went from being the underdog to becoming the UK's most used early career platform (Times Top 100)! - Lost all my hair (totally worth it, though). - Held 4 different roles, all within the exciting world of new business sales. - Had the privilege of working with 3 incredible managers who’ve shaped my journey. - Onboarded over 200 new employers, from enterprise giants to innovative mid-market companies. - Moved offices from Regent Street to Liverpool Street. - Worked from over 70 coffee shops across 15 countries (new environments sooth my ADHD). - Watched our membership grow from 150,000 to 1.3 million bright minds! - Seen the team quadruple in size—and we’re still growing (seriously, check out our live roles)! - Stopped telling people I was an introvert and embraced my authenticity—life got so much better after that. -Met some of the most incredible people - colleagues, clients, members, speakers! Time really does fly when you’re having fun. It’s rare to find purpose-driven work in the corporate world, let alone in a company culture that values results, realness, and rest in equal measure... maybe results a little bit more. In light of recent events, I know I’m exactly where I’m meant to be: fighting for a fairer and more equal society for the next generation. They deserve nothing less. 💪 Here’s to the next chapter! This is Izzy. She is my (almost) 10-year-old lab.   Izzy was the top dog- literally- in our house until 15 months ago when my son was born. She's been fighting to stay relevant in a house that is more focused more on stroller walks vs games of fetch. Recently though, my son learned how to throw a ball and her world has been turned upside down. Suddenly this 'lump of potatoes' is now a built-in friend who is giving her more attention than ever before.   This dynamic had me thinking about a well-established team having a new member join. It's a time filled with excitement, anticipation, and perhaps a touch of uncertainty. It's natural to wonder how we'll maintain our place within the team dynamic amidst the arrival of new talent. In many ways this can echo how Izzy felt when we brought our son home from the hospital. Instead of viewing the arrival of a new team member as a threat, let's embrace it as an opportunity for growth and collaboration!   So, how can we welcome a new team member while still continuing to stand out ourselves? Here's a few strategies to consider:   💫Embrace Change with Open Arms: Embrace the opportunity to learn from one another and celebrate the diverse perspectives that each team member brings to the table.   🌟Highlight your Unique Strengths: Whether it's your years of experience, your innovative ideas, or your ability to rally others around a common goal, let your strengths shine   👋Be a Mentor, Not a Competitor: Instead of viewing new team members as competitors vying for attention, strive to be a mentor and guide. Offer support, encouragement, and insights from your own experiences. Remember, the success of the team as a whole ultimately benefits everyone involved   🤲Foster a Culture of Inclusion: Make an effort to get to know your new colleagues, listen to their ideas, and make them feel welcome from day one.   ✏Embrace Continuous Learning: Finally, remember that growth is an ongoing process. Just as a dog can learn new tricks at any age, we can continually expand our skills and knowledge throughout our careers.
