🤯 Marketing is the only department with its own goals but is also informally assigned goals from almost every other department in the company. (keep me honest in the comments if you don't think that's true) Also, Marketing is rarely consulted on these informal goals and KPIs that we are being held to via the support we provide to other departments. That's what makes this role so unique and difficult. I've found that just asking department leaders about upcoming quarterly goals and projects on deck doesn't give me a good view of the marketing support they will need or allow me to allocate resources effectively, so I need to try something else. We are pretty solid on shared KPIs, so what else can I do? I've been thinking about it, and here's what I'm going to try in 3 phases. Phase 1: 🚀 Understanding 1️⃣ Shared Goals Workshop: Bring together department heads and discuss goals and how Marketing contributes to those goals. Will they underestimate what they need from Marketing? Yes. And that's okay because we are all learning together. 2️⃣ Department Deep Dives: Schedule individual meetings with each department head to discuss their yearly and quarterly goals, challenges, and targets. As marketers, we see those goals and challenges through a different lens and have so much to contribute! 3️⃣ All of that ☝️ on top of the regular evaluation of customer journey touchpoints to identify where marketing support and intervention are necessary. Phase 2: 🚀 Gather Info and Make the Plan! 1️⃣ Assessment Form: Create and ship a survey/form for each department to identify their specific marketing needs (e.g., content creation, lead nurturing campaigns). Make this even more effective by requesting them to prioritize those needs. 2️⃣ Success Metrics Alignment: In collaboration with each department, define success metrics for marketing campaigns. Make sure these metrics directly relate to departmental and overall company goals. Phase 3: 🚀 Communicate and Allocate 1️⃣ Quarterly Business Reviews: Conduct regular QBRs with department heads to discuss progress and challenges and adjust marketing support as needed. 2️⃣ Resource Allocation Plan: Develop a resource allocation plan outlining the marketing budget and team capacity to support each department. I'll let you know how this goes- what else would you add to this plan?

Something I noticed no one in marketing really talks about: 👉 How much more difficult distribution gets the further your team goes down the awareness funnel. Quick refresh on awareness funnel: 1️⃣ Problem aware: knows they have a problem, need to know options for solving it 2️⃣ Solution aware: knows there is a solution, but doesn't know what products exist to solve it 3️⃣ Product aware: knows the products available to solve the problem, doesn't know specifics about your company and why/how you're better 4️⃣ Most aware: Has selected you as a short list vendor, needs to know specifics about your offering to choose you over others So, when you're creating stage 3 and 4 content, no one really talks about: 👉 How it's really freaking hard to create this content in the first place. You'll need help and buy-in from sales, applications specialists, product, leadership... Then, you need to actually create high-quality content that speaks to this awareness stage. Few companies do this well, and when you do... 👉 It's EVEN harder to distribute this content. This ain't a comparison page that sits on your website collecting dust. These are quality pages that took a lot of effort to plan and create. You'll want to have multiple repurposing and distribution plans. For example, one competitor comparison write-up could be: 🔷 A website page 🔷 A training session with sales 🔷 2-3 social posts 🔷 1-5 videos showcasing specific use cases and features 🔷 A slide deck 🔷 Print collateral The list goes on. And this is where I see the biggest miss. For companies savvy enough to create product aware and most aware content, ensuring these are distributed in many ways across many "channels" flops. You need to get creative about what you define as a distribution channel, then how you distribute becomes much clearer. And the stakes are high because these are - by far - the most valuable assets you can create. #b2bmarketing #productmarketing P.S. Don't even get me started on "measuring" this 😉
