Are you interested in learning more about how to apply gender-responsive budgeting (GRB) to make water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services more inclusive in developing countries? 💧💸 Along with UN Women Sweden and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, NIRAS is excited to convene a special session at Stockholm World Water Week that provides insights into how SUSWA – a WASH project we are implementing in Nepal, is working with the Federal Ministry of Finance to localise GRB in Karnali province where many inequalities persist in the WASH sector, particularly for women. WASH-related behavioural and normative change processes are challenging and can be supported by public finance management tools like GRB. In this session, the convening partners will discuss and stimulate conversation on how strategic mainstreaming of gender and inclusion perspectives into the municipal WASH interventions can help promote inclusive decision making, contribute to the efficiency and sustainability of interventions, and address discriminatory practices. The conveners will explain how WASH service delivery has been used as a vector to help build capacities in GRB and influence gender dynamics in society. Speaking at this session, which is moderated by Hajar Yagkoubi, is Ulrika Grandin, Director, UN Women Sweden, Krista Orama, Senior Adviser for Gender Equality and Human Rights, Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland and SUSWA’s very own Raju Tirwa, Gender Equality, Disability and Social Inclusion Specialist. #WorldWaterWeek 2024 (25-29 Aug) focuses on water cooperation, for peace and security in its broadest sense. 📣 New report launch! The OECD - OCDE just launched its “Going for Growth 2023" report, with policy recommendations that could help OECD governments secure improved growth. The report notes that shocks and crises have dominated recent years, radically altering the social and economic landscapes, and as such GDP growth is expected to continue below trend in both 2023 and 2024. The report finds that:   ➡ Across OECD countries, reviving potential growth and improving the quality of economic growth will require governments to undertake ambitious supply-boosting structural reforms.  ➡To reduce emissions, comprehensive policy action is required, notably through substantial reallocation of workers and capital from emission-intensive activities towards greener activities.  ➡Addressing gender gaps in labor markets can help boost gender equality while also providing a remedy to the current labor markets tightness and widespread labor shortages. 📖 Read the full report 👉 https://lnkd.in/eNuZC6UP

THE SECRET BEHIND THE WORLD’S HAPPIEST COUNTRY... The Economist, 04 April 2024: For the seventh year running Finland has just been declared the world’s happiest country by the World Happiness Report, launched in 2012 to promote the sustainable development goals of the United Nations (un). Those surveyed were asked to evaluate their lives on a scale of one to ten, with ten the highest. While Scandinavian countries as usual occupied the top spots, both America and Germany fell out of the top 20. War- and revolution-racked Afghanistan held the bottom spot in the ranking of 143 countries, with a score of only 1.7 compared with Finland’s 7.7 and Denmark’s 7.6. Gender equality, trust in national institutions and fellow citizens, and low corruption are all important factors in Finns’ happiness, says Kai Sauer, Finland’s ambassador to Germany. In 1906 Finland became the first country in the world to give women both the full right to vote and to run in parliamentary elections. When last year a reporter for Reader’s Digest, a magazine, pretended to lose 12 wallets with cash and contact details in 16 cities around the world to test citizens’ honesty, Helsinki, the Finnish capital, turned out to be the most honest of the lot; 11 of the 12 wallets were returned. And according to the latest annual index by Transparency International, a Berlin-based organisation, Finland is the second-least-corrupt country in the world—after Denmark.
