Not all creators are created equally, and not all creativity should be measured by the same metrics. The announcement of this year’s Super Bowl halftime performer got me thinking about what, IMHO, is the greatest SB performance of all-time: Prince. The dude transcended musical genres, broke stereotypes, and simultaneously honored and satirized traditions. 🎸 My primary proof: In an era of synth-pop, Prince opened 1984’s ‘When Doves Cry’ with a blistering guitar solo as hot as the inside of a Hot Pocket after microwaving. Mmm. All the flavor, none of the mouthburn. 🔥 Even heavy metal hair bands didn’t dare to shred an axe as the first note of a song. Bold move. I was but a wee lad when that song came out, but I remember it vividly after all these years later. Being in a creative profession today, I realize how his art influenced me — and even encouraged me in many ways. 👀 He clearly understood getting people’s attention and making something memorable are the important first and final steps to successful marketing campaigns. Making money in between those is important, but it ain't the only metric that matters. Methinks Prince Rogers Nelson would have made a magnificent marketing professional.
