I've traded a Cannes Big Gulp™ of rosé for a warm Carolina breeze this go 'round (what Garden City, SC lacks in Prada stores it makes up for in hushpuppies). But I loved this musing from all-time great creative human and Entertainment Jury Pres. Geoff Edwards: "Entertainment is the new upper funnel." Our audiences have never been less captive, so captivating them means entertainment them vs counting on any vintage media buy to herd eyeballs. Herding hearts is a different ballgame – and maybe that's one of the many reasons why a harrowing doc about young women counting on WhatsApp to evade the Taliban, won the Grand Prix in Geoff's jury. If you're still reading this, good for you (I rarely read in-feed LinkedIn posts longer than 100 words, bc hey we're scrollin' here). Back to the new upper funnel thing. What started in the long long ago as more of a niche awards category is fast becoming the industry itself. No doubt Marcel Yunes feels the same way, and we're not alone (lookin' at you, Sugar23 & Superconnector Studios & Anonymous Content & Maximum Effort). Six years after the horrifying turnout of the festival which executed some of the most iconic marketing efforts of our time, Billy McFarland is back at it, announcing his plan to launch Fyre Fest 2. AND THE BUZZ IS ON. From McFarland's interview with Morning Brew to even being mentioned in a LinkedIn profile mastery class (shout out to Portia Obeng), it seems like Fyre Fest's bad rep is helping create all the more conversation around the sequel. The festival's website even claims to have sold out the first round of pre-sale tickets (or is this just another form of hype-generating trickery)! While I watch from afar, I'm curious about the opinions of my network. Do you believe McFarland will be able to pull off a second (more like a first) Fyre Fest and redeem his reputation, or is this just another stunt to help him pay off the $26M he owes from the first go-round? #FyreFest #Marketing #marketinggenius
