Empowered to Save. Inspired to Serve. That means something to us. Volunteerism empowers individuals to find their purpose, to take their passion and turn it into meaningful change. When each of us, in our own way, answers the call to make a difference, we make progress in solving our most persistent problems, and create stronger communities and a more just society. This National Volunteer Week is an opportunity to recognize and thank volunteers who lend their use their time, talent, voice and resources to meet the critical needs of our communities. The theme for National Volunteer Week is Celebrate Service – an opportunity to shine a light on the people and causes that inspire us to serve. At Sterling Rescue, our volunteers are truly empowered to save and inspired to serve, and while we love to shine the light of them to celebrate what they have done, they all shine their own lights every day in our community, helping people when they need it most. We need you to help us, and shine your own light. Join us and be a part of something amazing. https://lnkd.in/euCeAEnH

What tradition do I have on 9/11? I give volunteer service to people I know. Here is today’s. Twenty two years ago was September 11, 2001. That is a day for the people of The United States of America to remember. On 9/11/2001 I was in college. It is a day I remember well. Those who are not old enough to remember 9/11 might establish a foundation for remembering the day by studying about it and watching videos from the day. For me, remembering 9/11 is put into action by giving service on or adjacent to 9/11 each year. For choosing such volunteer service, there are many opportunities to pick from. In recent years I try to pick a volunteer opportunity that lets me help someone I personally know. Others I know prefer to contribute to an organized service project that benefits their local community (find one at JustServe.org). Some of the most vulnerable people in our communities need help from non-profit organizations, which need volunteers. The point is to remember 9/11 by giving service locally. This year, I am helping someone I personally know who has great need of my help. I am helping them locate senior housing that meets their needs and timing. For this person I am providing a lot of help spread out over many months. Today specifically I am also providing some help to them. I cannot think of a better way to commemorate 9/11 today than by helping this person. They are very grateful. Sometimes helping someone you know can make a big difference in their life. Often the help is not needed on a day like 9/11, and sometimes it overlaps with a day like today. Help should be given when it is most needed. Conversations and listening are essential to understanding if you can be of service to someone and how you can help them. Planning ahead is key to giving service on 9/11. If you don’t plan, it won’t happen. If you plan for it, and something derails those plans, then pick another day to keep the commitment. If you are using a lot of time to help someone on an ongoing basis, that may do fine for giving volunteer service on 9/11, if you remember and reflect on 9/11 during the day. It’s unwise to let life get out of balance by volunteering more than you can sustain. And sometimes in life, we may find ourselves in a season where we are the one in need of help and volunteer service from others. In that situation, being willing to let others know you need help and allowing them to help is the service you can give.

This Volunteers’ Week, we’re highlighting our Older People’s Services (OPS) and the many, rewarding ways that volunteers can get involved with this area of our work. Glenda, our Director for Older People’s Services, (pictured top left) shares more: “Volunteers can help to connect an older person with their community and create meaningful relationships that they would otherwise miss out on. They enable us to provide the variety and level of care and support that we do and without them, we would be so much poorer and as a result so would the older people in our communities.” There are so many practical ways that volunteers can help older people to experience a rich and full life be that in our residential home or our Churches some examples are: - Craft and hobby-based clubs e.g. book clubs - Lunch clubs and CAMEO clubs (come and meet each other) - Our community choirs or singing by heart (our dementia friendly singing programme) - Day trips, outings or assisting somebody to go on a short walk - Reading to people, sitting and chatting to them and spending time with them.
