Check out this recent post from our Senior Mental Health Advisor, Rick Gertsema. Good things are on the horizon related to expanding the mental health workforce in our region and beyond!
Me, Traci Marciniak (Pres. of the Miller-Dwan Foundation) and Mike Seyfer (Chair of our Board of Directors), are back from a trip last week to NYC and Washington DC! We were able to meet with the NYC Mayor's Office of Community Mental Health, Community Based Organizations (CBO's) like The New York Theological Seminary and Hey There Beautiful, who have implemented PM+(Problem Management Plus), plus a Site Visit to Brooklyn where PM+ has been implemented. All are thrilled with us bringing PM+ to the Twin Ports and are eager to partner with us as we start our PM+ Training in January 2024! We met with our new partners from The New School of Social Research and George Washington University (GW) to develop a strategic plan for expanding the mental health workforce, not only in our region, but nation wide. Then off on a train to Washington DC to meet with Senator Amy Klobuchar's Sr. Policy Advisor to raise awareness, advocacy and potential policy changes that may be needed in the implementation of PM+!! It is so exciting to work with Global Partners to transform mental health care and the mental health workforce. I want to share my sincere gratitude to all who supported us on our adventure!

Join Young Roots and the Helen Bamber Foundation on 15 May for the launch of our new joint report "They Made Me Feel Like Myself". The report - based on learning from the YR and HBF partnership - shows what a trauma-informed, holistic approach to supporting young people can look like, and how this can help professionals to build an authentic picture of a young person’s age. This approach not only helps with assessing age but also reduces the harm that the process causes. https://lnkd.in/eYfU-xE3

Oh, what I wish I had learned in my teacher-preparation classes before standing in front of my high school students. In this powerful episode, Dr. Gary Howard discusses the implications of racial-driven trauma – how it impacts students' mental health and school performance and how all teachers can follow a few simple practices to become more sensitive and responsive to their racially traumatized students before trying to teach anything. Director of Security Little Rock School District🔒Zero Now National Council of School Safety Directors Founding Leadership Board 💯 Security Consultant ☑️ Speaker ➡️ Problem Solver 🎯Safety & Security Specialist
This perfectly highlights the problems with school safety and security! The state went from having a solid plan to address the underlying issues to now cutting funding. What’s happening here? Legislators and government officials, you need to do better! #SchoolSafety #SchoolSecurity #Education #Law #NCSSD #ZeroNow
I was very proud of the work my home state Michigan had done to improve school safety and mental health the last few years. They prioritized mental health and assessments, but allowed for schools to make their own decisions on how to allocate resources. They created a school safety and mental health commission that I was proud to serve on. This commission was tackling how to increase mental health professionals presence in schools. That all came to an end last night at 4:45 am when the State of Michigan stripped more than 90% of the school safety and mental health funding, and defunded the school safety and mental health commission. A sad day for school safety and mental health in Michigan and I hope our citizens are paying attention.

When it comes to accessing mental health support, some of the most significant challenges faced by families from diverse cultural backgrounds include cross-cultural communication, understandings of health, trouble navigating health systems and marginalisation. Culturally responsive practice is about setting aside your own feelings of discomfort to create a safe space for families to express their thoughts, feelings, experiences and expertise. Through this, you can foster a mutual understanding of differing perspectives and priorities within the family. This practice course has been developed to support you in developing skills to not only recognise cultural assumptions and judgements, but also respond to children who have experienced racism and help families shape their meaning and response. By addressing your cultural biases and highlighting families’ strengths, you can help children flourish by feeling proud of their cultural identity.
