A Testament to Teamwork and Brotherhood In the early days of Maritime Security Response Team West (MSRT-West), what truly stood out was not just the missions completed, but the incredible team effort that brought the unit to life. The process of standing up MSRT-West was one of the most challenging periods any of us faced. The long hours, mental and physical exhaustion, and high expectations could have easily overwhelmed any one of us. But what made those days remarkable was the unwavering commitment of every team member. It wasn’t just individuals working toward a goal; it was a cohesive unit, a brotherhood bound by a shared sense of purpose. It wasn’t just about achieving operational readiness—it was about the pride felt in each other's success, the trust placed in one another, and the camaraderie that turned difficult tasks into achievable milestones. Together, challenges were faced head-on, driven by a collective will to succeed. The sense of pride that comes from knowing that everyone played a part in establishing what MSRT-West has become today is immeasurable. But even more rewarding was the camaraderie and brotherhood built along the way. Support for one another through the grueling days forged bonds that will last a lifetime. MSRT-West is more than just a unit; it’s a testament to what can be achieved when a group of dedicated individuals comes together with a common goal. After a recent Board meeting, Stephen Schwartz and I took a Dialogue Miles™ walk in French Park, in Cincinnati OH. We walked about 5 miles and stopped by Steve’s childhood home where we climbed through the brush to get a glimpse of the backyard he played in as a kid. He described the joy of living in that neighborhood, from bottle rockets and sledding to running track. After the walk, we enjoyed a wonderful dinner with Steve and Felice at their home.   About a decade ago Steve asked me to join the Board of LION, which has been a true honor. During this period I became exposed to countless examples of what a purpose-driven company can achieve. Lion’s Purpose is to ensure first responders and military personnel are ready for action. Their Mission: Each and every day we fulfill the personal safety, readiness, and identity needs of our customers worldwide.   A few takeaways…   - We should walk with business associates as CEOs to ponder and discuss ideas more often. - The act of walking and talking is a very different experience than just sitting across a table from someone. It can be easier to have more time to ponder and process thoughts while walking and talking which is very comfortable to me.  - Steve and I are good thought partners because of our curiosity about what we observe or hear, and how we deliver our answers that are not threatening or condescending. It's so important to have thought partners in all phases of your life.   - Knowing people in the office is a lot different than seeing a person through the lens of their life journey.   - A great reward is when you know someone professionally and then you see their personal life. It is amazingly additive.

Here’s the essence: The biggest hurdle to achieving new goals is the "whirlwind"—those daily tasks and urgent demands that consume our energy and focus. To break free and succeed, we need discipline and a clear framework, like the 4 Disciplines of Execution (#4DX): 1. Focus on the #WIG (Wildly Important Goal): Keep your current operations steady while pushing forward one crucial goal. Ask yourself, what one achievement would make other tasks seem secondary? 2. Measure #Lead Behaviors: Track daily actions (lead measures) that drive results (lag measures). This keeps execution consistent and engaging by focusing on immediate, controllable activities. 3.Put up a Scoreboard: Create a visible, simple scoreboard to track progress. This maintains focus and motivation by showing whether you’re winning at a glance. 4.Schedule Weekly Accountability Talks: Hold regular, peer-level meetings to review progress, discuss actions taken, and set commitments for the next week. This reinforces accountability and commitment to the goal.
