Here are three key strategies that made a difference: 1. Create a "Working With" document: Outline your working and communication style to avoid surprises with new team members. Screenshot this and share it with your team. 2. Schedule quarterly promotion meetings: Request a career ladder from your manager and track all your projects against it. If a career ladder doesn’t exist, create one to ensure your work aligns with the required skills. 3. Make your manager’s life easier: Help with hiring, plan social events, and instill team culture. I was the go-to person for planning outings, and it paid off. Implement these strategies and watch your career take off! Don't forget to stay tuned for more!

#Worklife: Good morning! Welcome to a brand new week. “We don’t need American idols. We need American icons of work.” Mike Rowe, Host of Dirty Jobs and a Podcaster. During high school I worked in a warehouse belonging to that old chain where “America shopped.” There, I worked alongside several big city firemen. This of course was a second job for them, a way to make a few extra dollars every month. It was an amazing experience to be around these men. They worked hard, they took no gruff, and they enjoyed the work and one another. It was a great learning opportunity for a young punk. They enjoyed the experience of hard work, of working together. Understanding opportunity seems to be hard for many young people today. All we wanted back then was a “yes”, a chance to work, to earn spending money. Today, from ads to conversations, all we seem to hear is the word “easy.” That the product or brand will make life easy after purchase. You and I know the truth. Nothing good comes easy. It takes study, trial, failure and possibly years of “playing” single A ball before we get a shot at the majors. If you want a new role, a promotion or just a change, study the path. Understand the steps required. Passion is the fruit, Persistence is the sauce. Do the work. You never know, you might just be a mentor and never know it. Thank you for reading. What would you consider doing if you weren't doing what you do? What if work isn't working for you? What if the job market needs more time to recover and there could be something else fulfilling in the meantime? It's ok or even helpful to ask these questions whether we are employed or not employed etc etc 🎈🎈🎈 We are capable of so much more than our day jobs and could enjoy something else we might not have considered yet. Becoming a founder has been a scary and fulfilling journey but I didn't go into this without having moments of doubt and fear! Regardless of where we're at, it's often unhelpful to think that there is only ONE way forward. There rarely is only ONE way. Thanks Janelle I would be tempted to do something physical because knowledge work can be draining and doing something physical can be immediately rewarding. I'd perhaps set myself up as the local important-but- not-urgent odd jobs person 😂 It would be a way to bring relief to overworked people who have too few hours in the day and I would also meet people 👋 🗂️ Life researcher/assistant (e.g. you want to go to Sardinia, give me your budget and I'll research options and send you itinerary options) 😌Kids holiday or activity booker (Send me your wishlist, I'll monitor release dates so you never miss a spot at your kids favourite club) 🧺Surprise picnic preparer & deliverer (send me location and I'll set up your picnic, clear it away, you surprise someone and simply arrive. 👩🍳Batch lunch / dinner prepper 🎁Christmas/bday etc present wrapper 🫧 Oven cleaner (no acid ofc 😬😷) 🪟 Window cleaner 🚮 Wheely bin washer 🐕 Dog walker 🪴 Plant feeder / waterer / re-potter 📦 Declutterer (Maria Kondo style) 🍁 Autumn leaf blower ☃️ Winter front door, path/ pavement deicers (this is important and urgent when it is needed though 😁)

Now that I'm laid off, everyday feels like Sunday. Don't get me wrong. It was genuinely painful to leave my dream job of 8 years this way. Google gave me the opportunity to work in the US and I was fortunate to transform my career multiple times. And don't get me started on the amazingly smart yet kind people I have worked with. After taking the time to wholeheartedly accept being laid off, I am truly happy now. I wake up every morning with a sense of purpose and I feel like a million bucks every day. So in my latest YouTube video, I talked about the 5 habits / tips that I had to apply to myself to rediscover my happiness: 1) Practicing gratitude 2) Avoiding further burnout 3) Being comfortable with uncomfortable things 4) Having a life outside of work And 5th being my favorite - having FU money. That's a strong language to use, but to me it simply means having the discipline and motivation to save up for a rainy day. And when that dreaded rain did come, I felt so awesome that all my previous efforts were there to help me. When something difficult comes our way, it can be either a blessing or a lesson. In my case, it was both. 🔍✨ Reflecting on a challenging experience: Google cut 13-year career short with a 3 am email, leaving individual and thousands stranded. The aftermath? A self-offboarding site, EAP access, and a less-than-helpful career transition service. But what we truly needed was compassion and human connection. A simple acknowledgment of our dedication and support during the company's success would have meant the world. Companies, take note: job loss is a major life shock. It deserves understanding and personalized support. Let's strive for conscious business practices that avoid layoffs or, at the very least, handle them with empathy. It's disheartening to see leaders "taking full responsibility" while cashing in millions.
