This #IDM2024, we’re celebrating the essential role midwives play in providing quality women’s health care, including preventing maternal and newborn deaths. To ensure they can continue to do this life-saving work, we need to equip them with the right tools and training necessary to provide high-quality care to mothers and babies worldwide.    Ultrasounds have been vital in managing pregnancies in high-income countries for years. Yet, two-thirds of pregnant women around the world still do not have access to them. Getting these devices in midwives’ hands is critical – and could stop countless preventable deaths. New tools like portable, AI-enabled ultrasounds promise to bring ultrasound technology to midwives in even the most remote parts of the world, helping us work toward a reality where every mother has a healthy pregnancy. In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), nurses and midwives have done a remarkable job with the tools they’ve been given. From using their ears to detect a fetal heartbeat or their hands to determine a baby’s position, their work is inspiring—and new #AI ultrasound technology could help improve the care they are able to provide.     Right now, two-thirds of pregnant women don’t have access to ultrasound technology. This lag results in preventable deaths, which is where AI ultrasound technology comes in. Empowering midwives with this technology  could revolutionize the care midwives can provide and help them identify the high-risk conditions women encounter during pregnancy. Access to this tool could get us closer to a world where healthy women deliver healthy babies.    In Kenya, researchers like Grace Kirigo Githemo are helping to solve for these preventable deaths and revolutionize midwifery. Getting both technology and training into the hands of midwives is critical so that more women can experience healthy pregnancies. Learn more about this innovative work:

Midwives play a crucial role in improving maternal and newborn outcomes by providing comprehensive and personalized care throughout #pregnancy, #childbirth, and the #postpartum period. Some of the key ways in which midwives #impact maternal and newborn outcomes include: 1. #Prenatalcare: Midwives provide regular prenatal check-ups, screenings, and education to #pregnantwomen, helping to identify and address any potential complications early on. This can lead to better management of health conditions, reduced risk of preterm birth, and improved overall maternal and fetal health. 2. #Laboranddelivery support: Midwives offer continuous support during labor and delivery, helping women to cope with pain, make #informeddecisions about their care, and navigate the birthing process. This can result in reduced rates of interventions such as #cesareansections and #episiotomies, as well as improved maternal satisfaction with the #birthexperience. 3. #Postpartum care: Midwives provide postpartum care to both mothers and newborns, monitoring their health and well-being in the weeks following childbirth. This can help to identify and address any postpartum complications, support #breastfeeding success, and promote #bonding between mother and baby. 4. #Education and #counseling: Midwives offer education and counseling on a wide range of topics, including #nutrition, #exercise, #breastfeeding, and #newborn care. On this International Day of the Midwife, it feels very apt to share this study by the The Commonwealth Fund. The question is, how can we make this happen faster? _________ "Research consistently demonstrates that when midwives play a central role in the provision of maternal care, patients are more satisfied, clinical outcomes for parents and infants improve, and costs decrease. Use of midwives is also associated with fewer cesarean sections, lower preterm birth rates, lower episiotomy rates, higher breastfeeding rates, and a greater sense of respect and autonomy for the patient. A recent analysis found that a midwife workforce, integrated into health care delivery systems, could provide 80 percent of essential maternal care around the world and potentially avert 41 percent of maternal deaths, 39 percent of neonatal deaths, and 26 percent of stillbirths. Midwives also could help address the workforce shortages that loom large in the U.S. maternity care landscape: nearly half of U.S. counties lack a single obstetrician-gynecologist, and it’s estimated that the nation needs 8,000 more to meet demand — a number that, by one estimate, may rise to 22,000 by 2050." #midwives #maternalhealth #healthinnovation #whitehouse #cdc #acog #acnm https://lnkd.in/e2PUiyzT

As we CELEBRATE International Day of the MIDWIFE! Outcomes around the globe CHINA The rates of childbirth interventions including the overall caesarean section in China and the episiotomy rate, especially in the central region, remain relatively high. Improved midwife staffing was associated with reduced rates of instrumental vaginal delivery and episiotomy, indicating that investments in the midwifery workforce could produce better birth outcomes. https://lnkd.in/gqZBzmcW CHILE Chile now has reached one of the highest rates of midwives per live births compared to most other high-income countries — 80 licensed midwives for every 1,000 live births. Under the Chilean Women’s Health Program, more than 90 percent of tasks in several health services are carried out by midwives, including prenatal, obstetric, and gynecological morbidity care, breastfeeding consultation, and family planning services.
