“I’m totally committed to doing that one day,” my client said about her long-held dream of becoming a painter.
As a successful executive, spouse, and mother to two boys, the time had just never been right.
But now, with her children grown and her work becoming more advisory, it was possible.

I’ve seen this often - dreams that we’ve held for a long time can still be hard to activate, even when we’re finally free to pursue them.
So I asked her to pinpoint where she was on my 5 Levels of Commitment scale - a tool I used simply to help her be clear.
After only a moment of thought she said, “I’d like to say Level 4, but the truth is it’s probably Level 2.”
The key here is not to pass judgement on where you are, but instead, to get really clear on what to do next to move toward Level 5.
Remember, commitment isn’t like a light switch that’s on or off - it’s something that you make stronger, step by step.
The next time you’re dreaming of something you want, use this scale to assess where you’re beginning.
