Steve Payne’s Post

As I conclude my time at EY, I’m deeply thankful for the incredible journey since I joined in 2008. The life-changing opportunities and roles and responsibilities entrusted to me are truly humbling. Like many organizations, the elixir, the magical potion, is the people. I am fortunate to have met many wonderful people across the globe and have forged deep and meaningful bonds that will endure beyond careers. Working with EY leaders and teams, both internally and for our clients, has been the source of some of my favorite memories. I have been fortunate to have built trusted relationships and even friendships with clients at the world’s most respected corporations and private equity businesses. I am truly humbled by the fact that the most successful executives of the greatest organizations engaged with and trusted the ‘Payne Perspective’ from a lad born in London who left school at 16 to complete an apprenticeship. There is not a day that passes that I am not grateful for the life this career has given to me and my beautiful family. As a consultant, a global road warrior, I truly appreciate the weight of the burden I placed on my wife Jane to raise our four children without a support structure given our immigrant status nor any hired help. What a magnificent job she has done. We have lived the American dream. I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to those who have been instrumental in supporting my career journey. To the colleagues and mentors who made me look good, thank you for your unwavering support and trust in me – your encouragement has been the cornerstone of my success. To the leaders who gave me opportunities, your confidence in me has been profoundly motivating and helped someone who at times suffered imposter syndrome to lean in, push on and do more. To the people of EY who brought a bounce to my step and a smile to my face; you are the fuel that inspired me to turn up every day and strive to be the best version of myself. To the clients, without you, we have nothing and thank you for making me a better advisor, leader and person. I am excited about what will come next for me, and I want to say thank you for those who have and are helping me in that pursuit. While I have reached my expiration date at EY, I have too much energy and passion for helping companies reach their full potential to stop at this juncture; even I don’t want to play golf every day. As a proud and retired Partner of EY I am excited to see the great things this beautiful firm will do for our clients, people and communities. #bettterworkingworld As Fleetwood Mac sang, Don't stop thinking about tomorrow Don't stop, it'll soon be here It'll be better than before Yesterday's gone, yesterday's gone #gratitude Best wishes one and all – live life large and remember, happiness is the greatest measure of success, and for the last time for my friends and colleagues at EY, “Happy Monday….”

Steve Payne, you are a true legend, my friend. Like many others, it was an absolute privilege to work with and learn from you in business. Personally, I observed and incorporated your tremendous leadership qualities into my life, and that emulation has significantly enhanced my ability to contribute to others, both personally and professionally. As a fan of your integrity and an admirer of your character, I thank you for all the good you have done for so many people, systems, and processes. My hope is that we cross paths again so I may thank you in person.

Enjoy your retirement Steve, I know you will achieve great things and do interesting things just as you did in your career at EY. I really enjoyed our time working together in your role as OTS Leader and then EY-Parthenon Leader, as they were called back then - your leadership and can do attitude were inspiring and as a result we achieved a lot. And I want to say a big thank you again for your sponsorship of me personally - putting into practice what you preach re enabling diversity in leadership positions! Wishing you all the best.

Steve, Congrats on a marvelously successful tenure at EY and best of luck with whatever comes next - family, golf, continued impactful advisory in a smaller scale? Impressed by the business, methodology and team you helped build over the last 15+ years. I truly enjoyed the opportunity to work with the great North American Working Capital team on a few very exciting projects and that team in itself is a great legacy you leave behind. .
