Thought I’d share a recent experience I had as a cautionary tale… Last night I was sitting in the middle of a busy shopping mall enjoying coffee with some friends with my smartphone next to me on a chair.  Suddenly, a black-clad figure wearing a hoodie ran past grabbing my phone as he did so.  I was the victim of theft…how exciting! I almost felt bad for the thief as I had anticipated I might be the victim of smartphone theft at some point.  The iPhone was encrypted and locked at the time and thus only accessible using either the passcode or biometric ID.  Not only could it not be accessed, it couldn't be wiped and thus it's very unlikely to be offered for resale. The SIM card in the device was quickly de-activated and so what the thief took considerable risk and effort in stealing was the equivalent of a turd; useless and not worth its own weight. This highlights an important point though: you never know when an asshole may appear.  Think of the information that might be contained on your device: pictures, emails, notes, txt msgs, sext msgs, social media accounts etc. The ability to access email alone can allow the resetting or hijacking of many other accounts or access to websites. Not securing your smartphone is a risk you really shouldn’t take. The phone was within arms length of me the whole time prior to the theft. I didn’t chase the thief.  Knowing the device was secure, there was no need to exert myself nor take such a risk.  Instead, I finished my coffee calmly and continued talking with my friends until Mall Security arrived to collect details. Likewise, even though I was able to geo-locate the device using the Find My Device feature, it’s not a good idea to go to the location to retrieve it as this also poses a safety risk. Within an iPhone’s Screen Time setting, which allows guardians to set up restrictions on how kids can use the device, there is the option to set up a secondary password that would be required from any user before they could successfully change an Apple ID.
