life news! after spending the last 8 months resetting, traveling, and reconnecting with hobbies after getting laid off last May, I made the decision to do things differently in this next phase of my career. my north star has always been building brands that drive cultural conversations, helping creatives tell impactful stories, and creating experiences that serve diverse communities. I’ve been fortunate enough to do this work throughout my career at some of the most exciting entertainment + tech companies in the world, but I also learned the hard way that the corporate world doesn’t love you like you think it does no matter how great your work is (if you’re one of the 250K+ people affected by layoffs, you probably feel this too). Fun story for the morning. I was once told that "you can't just drop empty values" and then by another person "why not just drop the empty values?" (from different companies) It turns out they were both right, but the situation is different. If you have reached a representative sample size, then you must drop the empty values. If you haven't reached representative sample size, you need to be much more clever. In case you're wondering one company grew dramatically and the other went through a huge round of layoffs, and then one which drops values is performing at a world class level. Both of the guys have PhDs from Berkeley... #datascience #prediction #classification

Many of us are reeling from the uncertainty caused by recent large-scale layoffs in the tech and gaming sectors, and by the challenge presented by integrating AI technology into our industries and our work. In contrast to the hand-wringing powerlessness I’m seeing in a lot of thought leadership and public discourse, however, what I’m seeing with my clients looks (not surprisingly) like a rainbow emerging in a stormy sky. 🌈🌈 I predict that this will be the year when we stop wishfully trusting our employers to steward our growth and become the CEOs of our own professional development. 🌈🌈 The people who can help you see what you’re accepting and what could be possible if you changed your standards, are NOT the ones trapped under the same glass you are. I spent 3 years de-risking my career. Long before the company got acquired. Long before the devastating tech layoffs. But the desire to diversify my career, wasn't driven by fear or lack of support. I had a great role & the best manager. The company had a healthy culture full of empowerment. We had 50% women executives on the board. I was SO energized by the work & people that  I wanted to drive more impact outside my 9-5. But, I ran into a problem most people run into. I wasn't sure where and how I could contribute. Until I went on a self-discovery journey to unearth my passion. Unexpectedly, I fell in love with coaching as a profession. It was love at first sight. But, I didn’t go into it full-time until 3 years later. - I took on clients alongside my "day job". - I created intentional steps to get there. - I had my coach as my constant accountability partner. It didn't happen overnight. (it rarely does.) What helped me not let go of the vision was: 1) Keeping the macro vision in mind all the time. 2) Focusing on the micro, step-by-step plan. I wanted to feel energized again, make a difference in the world and have financial freedom. What I want to help you understand is: a) carve out time to know where exactly you want to make an impact b) have a micro plan how to get to it gradually …with a 9-5 job or without it, the choice is yours. For all the things that we can’t control in today’s world, Prioritizing ourselves and our growth is one that we can. 👇 PS. Roy Opata Olende two thoughts on the existential crisis in the UX/Data/Product/Design spaces... First. I see that these disciplines have problems like any other business. Marketing, product, and UX need to align for the disciple itself - especially as it manifests in a company. I think we saw businesses getting by using wrenches as hammers to try to drive in screws. The dip made them blame the wrench for being (cost to value ratio) inefficient. The wrench may be perfectly fine and quite valuable. But multiple other things have gone horribly wrong. Second, there is a finite (to borrow from marketing) total achievable value, serviceable available value, and serviceable obtainable value. Constrained by business domain, product execution, the efforts of business processes, and receptivity (see point 1). That can filter things down really hard.
