Many students today are facing significant challenges when it comes to reading, which can have lasting implications for their academic journeys and beyond. That's why Maryland embraced the science of reading and is investing heavily in helping teachers adapt. This evidence-based method, rooted in the latest neuroscience findings, incorporates phonics instruction to help students make crucial connections between letters and sounds. This is an excellent article highlighting Baltimore City Public Schools. As you read, please suppress your “reading best practices” opinions, influences, and research influencers. Read without bias because the end goal is to celebrate this district’s success. Many of us understand, but we reluctantly accept the reality that many students DO need explicit phonics instruction. As an adult, I use phonic strategies. When I see a technical vocabulary word that is unfamiliar, I begin to “sound-it-out” and it works for me! 😊 However, my argument will never change, and that is; we must give students an opportunity to “apply” all of the phonics and word work by actually reading more than just decoble books. #reading #readingmatters #readingskills #literacy #literacyskills #k12education #k12schools #schoolprincipals #educationalleadership #superintendents #instructionalcoaching #childrensbooks #earlychildhood #earlychildhoodeducation

Our own Albert Johnson-Mussad is presenting "A Pedagogy of Equity" tomorrow, March 25th, at Future Focused 2024! https://lnkd.in/grT3sBbk Despite increased attention to equitable learning opportunities, many students, both striving learners and gifted students alike, do not yet experience equitable access to opportunity for excellence in their daily encounter with school. Forty years of research support a set of practices (e.g., prioritize literacy instruction across the curriculum) and related strategies (e.g., teach, model, and practice academic discourse) to optimize outcomes for all learners.
I'm excited to present "A Pedagogy of Equity" on Mon., Mar. 25, 1 pm, at this conference on expanding the nature of school. More information at https://lnkd.in/eDxybvG7.

Do you feel this is equally as true in 2024 as it was in 2017? Written by Jeff Goins: "The majority of trained artists are actually thriving. Here were some fascinating statistics: 70% of these graduates have found jobs within the arts, 75% have been or are self-employed, 99% consider creativity to be an important competency in their profession, and They report income levels that support families, sustain careers, and enable charitable giving. In other words, they are not starving. Contrast that with a 2014 US Census Bureau where nearly 75 percent of science, tech, engineering, and mathematics graduates are not employed in their field of study, and we are forced to consider a new reality for modern creatives. Many artists are, in fact, not suffering for their craft. They’re proudly producing work that matters and pays the bills. So, we are brought to a sobering conclusion about creative work: You can make art and make a living." Full article here: https://lnkd.in/gk7JnEJp
The arts are a more secure career than the sciences — here’s the proof.

Financial education research matters. Our Founder and Academic Director, Professor Annamaria Lusardi was interviewed by the National Endowment for Financial Education on why #FinancialEducation is so important. She recounts the impact of her research on different stakeholders -from students to policy makers worldwide- and the critical importance of measuring financial literacy. "My research supports the idea that we should have financial education in high school and that it should be a mandatory requirement to graduate," said Prof. Lusardi. The interview took place in Denver, Colorado, at NEFE's inaugural Financial Education and Impact Summit (FEII) before her move to Stanford University.
