There is no denying that #SiC will play a pivotal role in the #semiconductor landscape in the future and the power device market specifically. The pandemic and recent geopolitical upheavals have underlined the importance of secure access to semiconductors – and with SiC having been dubbed the future of the compound semiconductor industry, a lot of movement has taken place all over the world. In Europe alone, STMicroelectronics is building a SiC substrate manufacturing facility at its Catania site in Italy alongside the existing SiC device manufacturing facility. Back in 2022, onsemi inaugurated its expanded SiC fab in Roznov, Czech Republic which increased the company's SiC wafer production capacity by 16 times over the next two years. II‐VI (today Coherent Corp.) said in 2022 that it would accelerate its investment in 150 mm and 200 mm SiC substrate and epitaxial wafer manufacturing with large-scale factory expansions in both the US and Sweden. Infineon Technologies is increasing SiC production in Austria, and Wolfspeed is planning to build the world's largest SiC plant in Saarland, Germany. Infineon Technologies AG announced on the 24th that it has completed the acquisition of GaN Systems Inc.. The Ottawa-based company brings a broad portfolio of gallium nitride (GaN)-based power conversion solutions and leading application technologies. All required regulatory clearances have been obtained and GaN Systems has become part of Infineon, effective from completion of the transaction.   "GaN technology is paving the way for more energy- and CO2-saving solutions that support decarbonization," said Jochen Hanebeck, CEO of Infineon. "The acquisition of GaN Systems significantly steps up our GaN roadmap and gives us access to all relevant power semiconductor technologies, further strengthening Infineon's leading position in the field of power systems. We welcome our new co-workers for GaN Systems to Infineon."   Infineon now has a total of 450 GaN experts and more than 350 GaN patent families, which extends the company's leadership in power semiconductors and significantly accelerates time to market. The two companies' complementary strengths in IP and application understanding, as well as a rich pipeline of customer projects, put Infineon well-positioned to address a variety of fast-growing applications.   On March 2, 2023, Infineon and GaN Systems announced that the two parties had signed a final agreement under which Infineon would acquire GaN Systems for US$830 million.
