Here are some of my biggest takeaways from the 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭 in Frankfurt this past week:
(8 is too many for a post I know, but there were simply so many takeaways 😁)
𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬 between companies and their suppliers are crucial for success and must be made a strategic priority.
The 𝐜𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 pose significant challenges for many companies. Achieving price parity between conventional and sustainable materials and products is key for market penetration, as well as focusing on markets where there is regulatory pressure and high customer appreciation for sustainable products. It is so encouraging to see many companies making strides with great initiatives and innovative sustainable products.
𝐅𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 sustainability in all company processes, with everyone sharing responsibility with strong management support, is to my pleasant surprise becoming a more common practice.
Companies that effectively manage the 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 will achieve their goals by identifying dependencies, securing strong internal sponsorships, and supporting individual change journeys for lasting organizational change.
𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 alone will not achieve the sustainable transformations needed and should not distract from implementing meaningful sustainability initiatives. The focus has to remain on creating real impact and improving sustainability performance.
Increasing the share of 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐝𝐬 is essential for food security and preventing further soil degradation worldwide.
Maintaining the health of 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝, 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐬, while creating value for local communities and other co-benefits, will generate more long-term value than continued land exploitation.
𝐀𝐈 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚-𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐬, despite being the hottest trend, have a 𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐝𝐥𝐲 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 “𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭” 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐭. It was surprising to learn that data transfer alone from cloud to device constitutes over half of the total energy consumption in the data value chain!
It was a pleasure to attend the summit and to connect with so many like-minded professionals working towards the same goal, to make their businesses truly sustainable. Thanks all the speakers from Lyreco Group CDP Prosci Tree.ly Better Energy Nexperia Sweeft Analytics Evonik Marelli Merck Syngenta Biotic Essity Ambu A/S REHAU Borealis Infineon Technologies and others, as well as a big thanks to KEYNOTION for the excellent organization!
