#NEWS | We've partnered with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to launch a new safety booklet for #farmers when working with 🚜agricultural machinery near to, or underneath, overhead power lines. ⚡Overhead power lines carry electricity at voltages from 11,000 volts to 400,000 volts and lines are often bare cables, uninsulated. Anything touching the cables, even at low voltages, can be fatal. 📑Our new ‘Working together with agriculture to save lives’ booklet provides HSE and other sector specific information and advice in one document to help farmers, and enable them to download and keep. Architectural Design Standards for Governmental Veterinary Laboratories #11 * Laboratories (Wet and Dry) `Laboratory safety work practices and policies would be modeled and devised after OSHA practices and regulations. All personnel, including volunteers and students, must receive safety training relevant to their duties before they are involved in any work activities in the laboratory. Such training would include not only the project-specific safety instruction required by federal and state law, but also the general laboratory safety practices and policies that will ensure the protection of the safety of all individuals working in a potentially harmful research field. Refrigeration of Infectious Materials – One mode of prevention is the use of a low-temperature long-term storage system for specimens and cultures of dangerous pathogenic agents. As with all Commission Laboratories, a secure containment system for tuberculosis-positive specimens is necessary wherever large numbers of such specimens are stored. Suitable precautions must be taken for maintaining the safety of staff and the integrity of the goods during periods of electrical outages. Before implementation, the technical staff and the architectural and engineering department should examine the factors and feasibility of using a system. Preventing the Spread of Disease – Personnel Utilities/Ancillary Space – Special design consideration should be given to the provision of utilities that may include acids, alkali, and fermentation gases. Accessible facilities may be required for gas storage, chemical cylinders, etc. Additionally, facilities should provide for chemical and liquid waste handling, including a neutralization pit for low pH liquids and solid waste. Freestanding ventilated cabinets for the storage of gross pathology specimens or autopsy subjects divided by species and disease are also recommended. Such cabinets would not only isolate the specimen from the air, but would also provide additional enrichment due to air changes while limiting cross-contamination. Potentially infectious laboratory waste should be incinerated at a controlled temperature of 820-870ºC. A secondary combustion chamber should be maintained at 1094ºC for a minimum of 0.5 seconds. Monitoring and maintenance are necessary to ensure that incinerators are operated within specific emissions standards for pollutants including particulates, carbon monoxide, hydrochloric acid, hydrogen fluorine, oxides of nitrogen, oxides of sulfur, dioxins, and furans. Incineration – Incineration is useful for the large-scale destruction of animal carcasses, potentially contaminated feed (or food), laboratory waste, and some waste that other potentially infectious agents can be managed on site before pick up and autoclaving operations. Additional equipment is required to contain the off-gases from the incineration process.
