October is Global Diversity Awareness month, but why do we force hip-hoppers to waltz? This is irony surrounding the self congratulatory Multinational Diversity posts this month. No one disagrees: diversity is essential for organizational growth. But what happens within these multinationals after they've hired the diverse faces (OK yes ✅ achieved diversity KPI ✅ Self congratulatory LinkedIn post) but they then promote a homogenous mindset creating a "conformity trap"? It's akin to inviting people to your dance but not allowing them to bring their unique moves onto the dance floor and instead teaching them the company waltz. (Conformity trap = recruit a physically diverse workforce and train them to think in your corporate way to "boost efficiency" to "engender collaboration" and "reduce conflict". ) Not only is it counterproductive it limits the potential for true innovation and real diversity. I see the critical element of diversity is not just in gender, ethnicity, or age; it's the diversity of thinking that these hires bring with them supported by a strong culture of inclusivity (acceptance of diverse views, promotion of psychological safety and encouraging a voice for all).
