Today, August 2, marks the point at which humanity’s ecological demands exceed what Earth can regenerate in a given year. We are taking more than our planet can give. For the rest of 2023, we will live in the deficit. Earth is not limitless, neither are we.⁠ ⁠ How do they calculate this? In summary:⁠ (Earth’s Biocapacity / Humanity’s Ecological Footprint) x 365 = Earth Overshoot Day⁠ ⁠ This is our annual reminder to do less of what broke the planet, and more of what might heal it (and us).⁠

Today is Earth Overshoot Day 2023 🌎 Humanity has officially used a whole year’s worth of resources since the year began. Earth Overshoot Day is marked annually. It i date when humanity’s ecological demand exceeds the Earth’s capacity to regenerate its resources for that year. It represents the point at which we start living beyond the planet’s ecological means. To calculate Earth Overshoot Day, the Global Footprint Network evaluates 2 critical factors: 📌 The planet’s biocapacity refers to the Earth’s ability to produce renewable resources and absorb waste, 📌 The humanity’s ecological footprint quantifies human demand on nature, including consumption of resources and emissions. From 25 December in 1970, the Earth Overshoot Day has moved to 2 August in 2023, highlighting the urgency to act. Remember that « We don’t inherit the Earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children. » 🌱
