The University of Queensland is taking major steps to protect adolescents with life-threatening food allergies. This project aims to reduce the risk of severe allergic reactions among Australian teens. A recent study revealed that almost half of 10-14-year-olds with food allergies experienced a reaction last year, and 1 in 10 faced anaphylaxis. As adolescents gain more independence, the absence of specific guidelines for managing food allergies makes them vulnerable. With nearly $1.2 million in funding from the National Health and Medical Research Council, this research will trial new testing and treatment options, providing support to teens transitioning out of pediatric care. We learned there are approximately 4,000 allergists in the U.S. Only about 2,000 accept Medicaid, and even fewer of those take pediatric patients! Food allergy health disparities exist across the U.S. for children and adults: ➡ As of 2021, about 20 million people have food allergies in the U.S. ➡ About 16 million U.S. Adults have food allergies. ➡ About 4 million U.S. children have food allergies. ➡ in 2021, 7.6% of Black children had food allergies, compared to 5.5% of white children. ➡ Children with food allergies are two to four times more likely to have asthma or other allergic diseases.

When allergy-friendly products become unavailable - either due to supply/production disruptions or subject to recall - it can be difficult for those living with food allergies to find a safe, nutritious replacement. It is especially difficult when products such as staples (like bread and dairy-free milks) or infant products are affected. Although this particular recall is limited in scope, the food allergy community have been hard hit by these disruptions in the recent past . While many consumers can simply turn to an alternative brand during a shortage or recall, food allergy consumers cannot. They are loyal to and reliant on specific brands due to their ingredients and manufacturing practices. Early and ongoing communication with consumers is key to maintaining safety and trust.
