When I built Bryden Road, it was in part from my early observations of the work-from-home or work-from-anywhere movement.
I worked for a company called Bill Me Later, Inc., and most of the sales and marketing teams were distributed across the country, myself included.
That's when it occurred to me that the office we work in, we also LIVE in and so I was inspired by Work Hard, Live Well.
And all of the products in our business were geared toward living a mobile and remote work life.
In the end, I had a hard time achieving product market fit and as my phone rang off the hook for consulting dollars, I opted to shutter the business.
Every business owner has some purpose, some objective, and some vision.
This week I came across one with a company called Saysh owned and operated by Allyson Felix, an American track and field athlete.
The site sells running shoes but also offers a community for women around nutrition and overall health.
I was reading the blog and this entry struck me...
Speak Out, But Not Over
It's essential to voice your support and challenge harmful behavior when you see it. But remember, it's equally vital to ensure you aren’t speaking over women or making the conversation about you. Allyship means amplifying women's voices, not replacing them with your own. If you're in a position of influence, use it to create platforms and opportunities for women to share their insights and perspectives.
Saysh has a program where they will get a pair of walking, running, and jogging shoes for expectant mothers.
Why? Because it is well documented that a woman's shoe size increases during pregnancy and it can be hard to find some that fit.
There is nothing but feel-good all around this business venture.
And this is how community, personalization, and commerce come together to form something unique, good, and profitable. You don't need to build something huge, focus on building something good and people will find you.
