It’s a phenomenon would-be entrepreneurs never see coming. They’ve decided to buy a franchise, and work with me to find one that fits their goals and temperament. The excitement builds as the franchisor accepts the application and extends an offer to buy a territory. And then it happens. Their plans are shattered as their spouse gets cold feet and forces the would-be entrepreneur to back out. I call it the Spousal Ambush. And it happens more often than you’d think. Buying a franchise — especially when you, your friends, and your family don’t have a history of entrepreneurship — can be terrifying, especially for a spouse who doesn’t have that entrepreneurial streak running inside of them. It’s easy to see why they’d scuttle the deal, especially if they weren’t involved in the conversations about franchising that got you interested in the first place. That’s why whenever I start coaching people on purchasing their first franchise, after the individual makes it clear that buying a business is the way they want to go, I insist that the spouse or partner is involved in the conversation. That gives them a chance to get on the same page and ask all the questions they need to feel comfortable with moving forward. That’s my bit of wisdom for today — if you’re considering buying a franchise and you have a spouse or partner, bring them along for the discussions. It will save you a huge amount of grief, and you won’t fall prey to the dreaded Spousal Ambush!
