Recent updates to the Pratt & Whitney Canada manuals, specifically the PT6A-34AG Manual 3021242 Issue 72.0 and the PT6A-34AG Overhaul Manual 3021243 Revision 51, bring significant changes that mechanics and operators need to be aware of. Key Updates: 1. Prop Strike and Sudden Stoppage Inspection: Pratt & Whitney Canada has introduced detailed descriptions and decision trees to determine the maintenance level required for prop strikes and sudden stoppages. This includes factors such as the speed at which the propeller struck an object and the type of object struck. 2. Service Information Letter (SIL) Gen-135: Completion of SIL Gen-135 is now a crucial first step in the inspection process for prop strikes and sudden stoppages. This report helps repair shops determine the necessary steps to get the engine back in operation safely. 3. Power Section Overhaul Requirements: The overhaul manual now mandates a full overhaul level of inspection for almost all components of the power section, including non-destructive testing and measuring. Notably, the propeller shaft and the #5 bearing are now automatically discarded, which could increase repair costs and lead times. 4. Test Cell Run Requirement: After repairing the power section, a test cell run is required unless waived by engineering, which reviews the replaced parts before determining the necessity of the test. Aircraft Inspection plays an important role in the detection and rectification of structure damage. Be it a Cessna 172 or a Boeing 777, some basic inspection techniques assist the maintenance staff in improving the effectiveness of the inspection. These include: 1.      Do your homework before starting the inspection. The maintenance staff should consult the maintenance data to create a mental model of the area to be inspected. 2.      Before starting the inspection create a mental note of critical areas and consider one’s experience and shared knowledge for possible defects. 3.      Clean the inspection area and keep an eye on the area 4.      During inspection, stay focused on the job at hand and use necessary proper tools and equipment for the inspection. 5.      The inspection should not be rushed and the maintenance staff should dedicate sufficient time for an effective eye scan. 6.      Stay vigilant and try to avoid distractions during the task. 7.      Use Touch, feel and other sensory indicators to aid the inspection process. 8.      Effectively record the defect using proper nomenclature and share the experience with other staff or propose the defect for annual training. #aircraft #safety #aircraftmaintenance #safetyculture #qualityassurance #training #aviation

FAA Certificated Mechanic Bias Undermines Workforce Development In November, a member sought ARSA’s feedback on a frustrating turn of events. After 25 years of working for a repair station, the repairman-certificate-holding individual “no longer qualified” to sign approvals for return to service; he was told only a certificated mechanic could do so. This turnabout echoes a long-troublesome sentence in the FAA’s guidance regarding repairman certification. Order 8900.1, Vol. 5, Ch. 5, paragraph 5-1193 D.1. admonishes: “In no instance should anyone issue a Repairman Certificate with an airframe and/or powerplant rating to circumvent the process of obtaining a Mechanic Certificate.” Enforcing that language, and the underlying bias toward one kind of airman over another, circumvents both the plain language of the rules and modern career development logic. Pilots/A&P Mechanics: If you qualify for a 119 position for a 121 or 135 operator, consider adding that detail to your LinkedIn profile and resume. I've noticed some pilots include "119" somewhere in their LinkedIn profile (usually in the title) and resume, specifying that they meet the qualifications for Director of Operations, Chief Pilot or Director of Maintenance roles under FAA 119.69(a). This small detail on your profile helps recruiters to quickly zone in on qualified 119 post holders in a LinkedIn candidate search. Many companies give the title "Chief Pilot” for positions that do not require a 119-qualified pilot. Searching this title alone leads to a large amount of unqualified profiles when searching for 119 qualified candidates. Jobseekers: Add "119" or "119 qualified" to your profile if you meet the qualifications (see attached link for the specific qualifications for 119 DO’s or CP’s). Recruiters: Consider using phrases such as “119 Director of Operations,” "119 Chief Pilot," or “119 Director of Maintenance” in your job postings if you are searching for experienced 119’s for 121 or 135 operations.  Example: "Must meet FAA 119.69(a) qualifications to perform the [insert title] role on a 135 certificate."  This specificity helps attract suitable candidates.
