The problem of not having enough airframe and powerplant technicians is not because of all of them retiring it is more that able technicians are getting out of the business because other sectors in business are paying more than companies want to pay their aircraft technicians. The technicians no longer want to have the stress and liability on their head when companies are only offering peanuts for compensation. This problem is not going to go away anytime soon until companies realize if you want a good quality technician you are going to have to pay for that. Good quality technician.

Day-in, day-out, they work tirelessly to assure the airworthiness and safe operation of today’s fleets. Their skills and expertise are indispensable. Here’s a story about one of them, Senior Director of Engine Asset Management, Desean Palmer, who began his career as an Aviation Maintenance Technician. Desean has been a vital part of the VAS Aero Services maintenance operation for 18 years. He got his start in aviation maintenance at Broward College where he received his Airframe and Powerplant Licenses & Certification, and a degree in Aviation Management. 🛬 What has helped Desean advance his career? Desean credits his rise in the aviation tech ranks to the time management skills, problem solving abilities and overall detailed knowledge like the importance of proper documentation and clear communication that he has learned over the years. The aircraft c check is considered part of the "heavy maintenance" portion of aviation maintenance. The C Check happens between 18 months to two years (depending on the aircraft). This is likely performed in a special facility, taking 1-2 weeks. During a C. Check, an aviation maintenance technician performs an extensive check of individual systems and components for serviceability and function. Here are some examples of C Check items, per Aviation Pros: Visually check flight compartment escape ropes for condition and security Check operation of DC bus tie control unit Visually check the condition of entry door seals Operationally check flap asymmetry system Pressure decay check APU fuel line shroud Inspect engine inlet TAI ducting for cracks Inspect stabilizer attach bolts Inspect floor beams Detailed inspection of wing box structure

Joby Aviation are feeling pretty good after receiving the all-important Part 145 Repair Station Certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) this week, reports a press release. The company believes they are “the first eVTOL developer” to receive this particular certification from the FAA. This allows the company to perform select maintenance activities including maintenance repair operations (MRO) and overhaul on its eVTOL aircraft fleet, marking another key step on the path to commercialising Joby’s electric air taxi service. Bonny Simi, Joby President of Operations, remarked, “This approval marks another foundational piece of Joby’s vertically-integrated strategy, including aircraft development, manufacturing, charging systems, commercial flight operations, and now MRO services, as we prepare to bring our revolutionary eVTOL aircraft to market.” She continued, “Receiving the Part 145 certificate from the FAA is an important step towards developing the needed maintenance, repair and overhaul services to support Joby’s commercial flight operations, as well as establishing career pipelines for people who want to become eVTOL aircraft technicians.” Under this particular certificate, Joby is to begin performing select airframe, radio and instrument repairs on traditional aircraft, with plans to expand its MRO services in the coming months and years. The certificate also allows Joby to provide paid on-the-job training to aspiring aircraft technicians.
