Aircraft refueling during a transit check involves coordinating with the flight crew, grounding the aircraft, and enforcing no-smoking rules. Fueling is done with trucks or hydrant carts, monitored by LAEs or technicians who also check for leaks. After refueling, the Lae or technician documents the amount and gives the fuel receipt to the flight crew. This is happening at a time when the global fleet of commercial aircraft is projected to increase by a third by 2034, involving over 36,400 vessels. 🚨 SAFETY FIRST !!! A technician washing a jet engine without PPE... 🤦♂️ Aircraft engines are regularly washed to improve performance. Engines are operated in salty, sandy, or dusty environments. In addition, objects such as insects or birds are ingested and leave residue on the engine parts that affect their efficiency. Moreover, the combustion process often emits fine particles in the air that are later ingested by the engines and deposited on engine parts and surfaces. Aircraft engines then need to be regularly washed to be in the optimal state for improved performance. The most common way to wash the aircraft engine is to use water with limited mineral parts, such as demineralized water or water with restricted chloride content. A detergent product can also be added, and even glycol to cope with low temperatures. With the support of a compressor washing rig, the water is propelled at high pressure through spray nozzles into the engine running at dry motoring mode. In any case, the operation must respect the procedures defined by the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer). Here’s a story about one of them, Senior Director of Engine Asset Management, Desean Palmer, who began his career as an Aviation Maintenance Technician. Desean has been a vital part of the VAS Aero Services maintenance operation for 18 years. He got his start in aviation maintenance at Broward College where he received his Airframe and Powerplant Licenses & Certification, and a degree in Aviation Management. 🛬 What has helped Desean advance his career? Desean credits his rise in the aviation tech ranks to the time management skills, problem solving abilities and overall detailed knowledge like the importance of proper documentation and clear communication that he has learned over the years. What led Desean into a career as an Aviation Maintenance Technician?  “At a young age I was always fascinated with airplanes, and how they were able to get off the ground,” Desean notes. “That then sparked my interest in aircraft engines, bringing me to where I am today, leading our engine division. “I love the dynamic environment of the aviation industry, connecting with people on different topics and projects, and the opportunity to brainstorm creative ideas. It’s hugely rewarding,” he adds. 💡 What advice would Desean give someone who is considering becoming an Aviation Maintenance Technician? “Be engaging, apply yourself accordingly and allow yourself to evolve and take in all the knowledge possible. In Nepal, generally, press and people start voicing the term 'maintenance' with its literal meaning as Corrective Maintenance to be carried out after a fault or damage on the aircraft or accessories. But, C-Check is Preventive Maintenance, can be referred as regular servicing.
