While providing Wellness Days are a welcome step in the right direction - there are 3 primary reasons why they don't work and keep leaders resentful about offering them: 👇 1 - They Are Reactive 💥 - Are managers under skilled? - Is there Mental Health stigma? - Are metrics actually achievable? Wellness Days will certainly provide temporary relief... But unless the organization is willing to ask the tough questions; core issues will persist and lead to a dependence on reactive strategies. Action Item: Ask - What procedures are fueling burning out within your org and what core needs do your employees have which are not being met? 2 - They Assume Knowledge 💡 Wellness Days can be highly effective when an individual has a baseline understanding of Mental Health and knows what their body needs to recover from stress. What percentage of your team has this knowledge? I would guess less than 50%, which means most will use the day watching Netflix, drinking beer or scrolling through social media. Action Item: Educate your team on how to effectively manage stress, recover and prioritize their Mental Health. 3 - They Assume Motivation 🔥 It takes discipline and effort to actively recover from stress. If someone is lacking purpose/vision in their work... Then the chances they will spend a Wellness Day maximizing recovery for better performance will be low. Action Item: Align work to what intrinsically motivates people. ---------- Until leaders action these three areas, they'll continue to feel resentful providing Wellness Days and believe they are a gimmicky thing that doesn't work. 🧠

Supporting wellness practitioners to assist their patients during times of mental health challenges, even if their primary focus is not mental health services, can be achieved through several approaches: 🎓 Training and Education: Provide wellness practitioners with training and education on basic mental health awareness, including recognizing signs of distress, offering empathetic support, and knowing when to refer patients to mental health professionals. 🫱🏻🫲🏽 Collaboration and Referrals: Encourage collaboration between wellness practitioners and mental health professionals. Establish referral networks or partnerships with mental health providers to ensure patients receive comprehensive care when needed. 🫶🏼 Holistic Approaches: Emphasize holistic approaches to wellness that integrate physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Encourage practitioners to incorporate stress reduction techniques, mindfulness practices, and relaxation methods into their sessions to support overall mental health. 🧘🏻♀️ Self-Care Practices: Promote self-care practices among wellness practitioners themselves. Encourage regular self-care routines, such as mindfulness meditation, exercise, and seeking peer support, to prevent burnout and enhance their ability to support patients effectively. 📖 Continuing Education: Offer ongoing continuing education opportunities for wellness practitioners to stay informed about the latest research and best practices in mental health support. This ensures they remain equipped to address the evolving needs of their patients. ☮️ Creating Safe Spaces: Foster environments within wellness practices that are safe, non-judgmental, and conducive to open communication about mental health concerns. Patients should feel comfortable discussing their emotional well-being with their practitioners without fear of stigma or judgment. By implementing these strategies, wellness practitioners can play a crucial role in supporting their patients' mental health, even when mental health services are not their primary focus. Collaboration, education, and holistic approaches can help ensure comprehensive care for patients' overall well-being. KHEM CARES! I turn LinkedIn into your Mental Health friend Award Winning Young African Leader for the Mandela Washington Fellowship Award, 2022| Mental Health enthusiast|Systems Thinking.
Ever noticed how the majority of wellness success stories are not just about individual efforts? Things like: ✔️ Daily habits that support mental health ✔️ A supportive community ✔️ Consistent, positive messaging ✔️ Personal success stories ✔️ Resources for help and guidance ✔️ Data on the benefits of wellness practices ✔️ Opportunities to join wellness events ...are all crafted outside of one’s personal wellness routine. If you don't have access to these elements – as someone looking to improve your wellness – you can't craft a supportive environment all by yourself. And just because you might lack some resources now, doesn't mean you can't start making changes. Without these, your journey to wellness might slow down – as you're trying to figure it out alone. For those on a path to better mental health: ensure you have the right support system. It’s a collective effort. It’s not just on you to figure it all out – most of what you need for a wellness journey isn't generated alone. Surround yourself with the right environment and tools for success. P.S: Real wellness is a team effort. Don’t isolate; integrate!
