AHK WORLD BUSINESS OUTLOOK – FALL 2023   🔵 Against the backdrop of the economic slowdown regarding different occurrences and aspects, companies are reporting a weaker but still stable business situation (45 percent good, 14 percent bad).   🔵 Although business expectations are also more cautious than in the spring, they are significantly higher than economic expectations (45 percent better, 12 percent worse). Companies in North America, the Asia-Pacific region (excluding Greater China), and the MENA region, for example, expect business to improve significantly while ones in Europe and China are more cautious.   🔵 Companies' investment intentions are significantly more expansive at their international locations than in Germany (33 percent have higher investment plans, 20 percent lower).   🔎 You are interested in more details on the chances, challenges, trends, and outlook of German investors aboard? Here are the latest news on Japan's business ecosystem! A recent government survey reveals that business sentiment among major Japanese companies has turned positive in the April-June period, thanks to the rising numbers of foreign tourists. Key Highlights: The index of business conditions for the first three months of the fiscal year stood at 0.4, marking the first positive reading in two quarters. A positive figure indicates that a majority of firms believe conditions have improved. Manufacturing Sector: The index for manufacturers was at -1.0, with cost increases impacting production machinery and steel makers. Non-Manufacturing Sector: The index for non-manufacturers was 1.1, benefiting from growing demand in the service sector as companies raised prices to offset higher costs. About 11,000 companies responded to the quarterly survey by the Finance Ministry and the Cabinet Office. The results suggest a moderate recovery in the economy, although officials remain cautious about global economic risks and the impact of price hikes. British business in China is currently treading water. This time last year businesses in China were coming to the end of what was a torrid year doing business, underpinned by Zero-COVID and uncertainty, but where does sentiment lie now amongst the British business community here one year on? The Chamber's recently launched 'British Business in China: Sentiment Survey 2023-2024' delves into how British business here is really thinking. Here are some very quick takeaways... 1. Pessimism is down from the pandemic-high but 60% of businesses are reporting a more challenging business environment than in 2022. 2. Slow economic recovery has meant many companies are adopting a "wait-and-see" strategy which has impacted investment. 3. Unpredictability in geopolitical and economic relations is keenly felt, with 42% of British business citing other country's trade policies towards China as a significant operational challenge. 4. Recent proactivity from Chinese government in introducing supportive measures has been welcomed, 50% viewing these initiatives addressing regulatory concerns postively. 5. Challenges still persist; navigating cybersecurity regulations, transparency of business environment and enforcement of laws and regulations being top of the list. 6. Opportunities still remain; sustainbility, AI and innovation stand out as areas aligning with China's strategic growth ambitions with 44% of those increasing investment in operations doing so in these same areas. After 16 years of talks, Switzerland and India finally established an FTA. According to Swiss Economy Minister Guy Parmelin, after 16 years of talks, Switzerland and India have agreed on a free-trade agreement (FTA). Parmelin left Davos, Switzerland, for India right after the World Economic Forum, at the last minute, at the invitation of Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal.
