Today kicks off #BlackMaternalHealthWeek founded by the #BlackMamasMatter Alliance. The Black Mamas Matter Alliance (BMMA) is a Black women-led cross-sectoral alliance that centers Black mamas and birthing people to advocate, drive research, build power, and shift culture for Black maternal health, rights, and justice. We envision a world where Black mamas have the rights, respect, and resources to thrive before, during, and after pregnancy. The official theme for Black Maternal Health Week 2024 (#BMHW24) is “Our Bodies STILL Belong to Us: Reproductive Justice NOW!” Widespread restrictions on abortion care access coupled with rising cases of criminalization due to pregnancy loss continue to widen the gaps of adverse maternal and birth outcomes in the U.S. Many of the states with the most restrictive abortion bans have the worst maternal and child health outcomes and the least supportive social welfare and family support programs, particularly for Black women and birthing people. The time is NOW to demand for comprehensive public and private insurance coverage for maternal, sexual, and reproductive health care!! Info taken from Black Mamas Matter Alliance. #ReproductiveJusticeNOW #BlackMamasMatterAlliance #BMMA #BMMA2024 #BlackMaternalHealthMatters #ThisIsPublicHealth

Anti-abortion policymakers in the US House are pushing a federal funding bill that would do serious damage to sexual and reproductive health care. The bill includes poison pill riders that would attempt to defund Title X, Planned Parenthood and the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program, and to restrict access to gender affirming care. The bill also includes the discriminatory Hyde Amendment that bans abortion coverage for people enrolled in Medicaid and other federal programs, and the harmful Weldon Amendment that allows for refusal of care. Every person should have access to contraception and abortion, and be able to make decisions about their health with dignity and autonomy. But if this bill advances further, it could cause significant and irreparable harm to reproductive freedom nationwide. 🚨 Our policy experts are monitoring, and we will share updates as they become available. #BeBoldEndHyde #AbortionJustice

Founded by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance, Inc. (BMMA), #BlackMaternalHealthWeek aims to amplify the voices of Black Mamas and the values and traditions of the reproductive and birth justice movements. This year’s theme, “Our Bodies STILL Belong to Us: Reproductive Justice NOW!,” focuses on the devastating impact that restrictive abortion bans can have on maternal and child health outcomes, particularly for Black women. In 2019, non-Hispanic Black women and birthing mothers in SC experienced a 67 percent higher pregnancy-related mortality ratio compared with their White counterparts. #IntimatePartnerViolence and #SexualViolence also disproportionately impact individuals in the Black community. Sunday Sofa Activism! 📢 Looking for something worthwhile to do this Sunday? I have just the thing for you.... Respond to the Home Office Consultation on Safe Access Zones for abortion clinics. Safe access zones stop people from protesting within 150m of abortion clinics. These restrictions are essential to prevent women and pregnant people receiving harrassment when accessing ESSENTIAL healthcare. They also prevent abortion providers who work in these clincs getting harrassed on their way to and from work. The Home Office have launched a public consultation, which closes tomorrow! If you are like me and not "au fait" with Government language, British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) has put together a handy guide to help you fill it out. I have linked them both in the comments! This is the LAST hurdle for Safe Access Zones, and we must speak out and tell the Government how essential they are! #Womenshealth #Abortioncare #safeaccesszones

Nevada voters will decide whether to enshrine the right to #abortion into the state constitution after Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar on Friday certified the question for the November ballot. The measure would establish a “fundamental right to reproductive freedom” in #Nevada. It would also include the “right to make and effectuate decisions about all matters relating to pregnancy,” and allow the state to regulate the provision of abortion after fetal viability, or roughly 24 weeks of pregnancy. The certification makes Nevada the sixth state with an abortion measure certified for this year’s ballots, though the South Dakota measure is being challenged in court and Republicans in New York have said they intend to appeal a decision that kept that state’s measure on the ballot. 🇵🇱 Polish president Andrzej Duda vetoed the bill allowing the morning-after pill to be bought over the counter. The bill was passed in February with the support of prime minister Donald Tusk, who seeks to relax existing legislation on reproductive health. ❕However, president Duda rejected the bill claiming that it violates article 122 of the Constitution on "the level of protection of children's health", as it allows the emergency contraceptive pill to be obtained without medical supervision or parental consent from the age of 15. 👉 Since taking office earlier this year, Tusk's government has promised to reverse restrictions carried out by the previous administration of the conservative Law and Justice party (PiS), which limited the purchase of emergency contraception and tightened access to abortion. The government is also pushing a proposal to allow abortion up to the 12th week of pregnancy. #Pologne #Poland #ReproductiveRights #DroitsReproductifs #MorningAfterPill #PiluleDuLendemain

At Legal Momentum, we are relieved that today the U.S. Supreme Court upheld access to mifepristone, rejecting a challenge brought by anti-choice doctors who sued to limit the availability of this important medication. Extensive evidence demonstrates that mifepristone, which is used with another medication to terminate a pregnancy up to the tenth week of pregnancy, is safe and effective. While we are glad for this decision, we acknowledge that safe medication abortions are still out of reach for many pregnant people in states with draconian abortion bans, with the impact falling disproportionately on women of color. And we know that the attacks on medication abortion are not over, since anti-choice extremists will continue to challenge mifepristone access, and the availability of abortion more broadly, through other means. Legal Momentum will remain steadfast in our advocacy for reproductive justice and bodily autonomy in this ongoing struggle. #mifepristone #abortion #reproductiverights #bodilyautonomy #scotus

Why are emergency abortions important? Nobody likes the concept of killing babies (unless you are a psychopath) but politicians should probably not be making medical decisions. Hypothetical situation: child is raped by a pedophile. The child ends up with an ectopic pregnancy, in which both the mother and child are guaranteed to die unless an abortion takes place. Because the fetus can't be moved to the uterus, ectopic pregnancies are not viable and cannot be saved. An ectopic pregnancy takes place in the fallopian tubes, not the uterus. Imagine being a child who is a victim of a crime suffering a medical condition where they know that it is not possible for the child to survive, and they will die if they have to carry them. I agree that abortions are often considered a form of birth control these days and happen way too much. But in this situation, everything is different. To do this to someone is comparable to terrorism. And anyone who would make a decision like that should probably not be practicing law. I think this would also defy the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act, also known as "EMTALA." But it is straight up stupid to incentivize crimes in a way that could force both Mother and baby to die. There are too many men (Epstein is a good example) who just want to spread their seed regardless of whether or not they would want to be a father, and children without fathers statistically cause more crimes.

It's June, and we are anticipating Supreme Court rulings on abortion cases once again. Recently, I discussed the EMTALA case with a journalist. A federal law, EMTALA (Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act), mandates Medicare-funded hospitals to offer stabilizing care, including abortion, to all emergency room patients. What are your thoughts on states preventing hospitals from providing emergency abortion care to patients facing severe pregnancy complications? Idaho has enforced a total abortion ban and are doing just that. Will the Supreme Court decision allow states to overlook pregnant individuals' needs in emergency departments? In my 23 years of providing abortion care, I have witnessed how abortion stands as the only form of healthcare where individuals are permitted and ultimately shielded from neglecting patients. Read more on this issue here: rewirenewsgroup.com/2024/05/30/doctors-warn-of-grave-consequences-without-emtala/ #AbortionRights #SupremeCourt #abortionishealthcare
