🇳🇱🍖 Breaking ground in cultured meat: The Netherlands progresses with an expert committee for tastings.
In a significant stride towards shaping the future of sustainable food innovation, The Netherlands has officially launched an independent expert committee tasked with evaluating applications for cultivated meat tastings. This progressive move comes six months after announcing a Code of Practice for cultured meat and seafood tastings, led by the Cellular Agriculture Netherlands Foundation (CANS).
Responding to this development, cultured pork producer Meatable has submitted its dossier to the panel, positioning itself to potentially host a tasting of its cell-based proteins in Europe. The Netherlands is poised to become the first EU country to allow pre-regulatory approval tastings, a testament to its leadership in sustainable food practices.
🔬 The expert committee, comprising toxicologists, microbiologists, physicians, and ethical experts, will meticulously assess company dossiers, enabling approved entities to conduct up to 10 tastings, each with a maximum of 30 participants over the course of a year. This unprecedented opportunity empowers companies like Meatable, Mosa Meat, and Upstream Foods to showcase their revolutionary approaches and fine-tune offerings.
“We are thrilled to see the protocol developed in consultation with the government is now being implemented,” said Maarten Bosch, CEO of Mosa Meat. “The Netherlands continues to be a global leader in sustainable food innovation, even as others in Europe appear to be taking a step backwards at the height of our climate and biodiversity crises.”
