There’s this red brick Thai restaurant Annie and I go to in the city. I dare say it’s our favorite restaurant as we always seem to find a way to mention it. So what’s so spectacular about it? Nothing. We sit at the bar. The noodles steam when the bowls rattle down, we smile at the first bite, and we’re out in 45 minutes. When you know what you’re getting, your brain has to do less work. Which means the path to get it is quicker, easier, and requires less thinking. Which means you’ll travel it more. It’s easy to believe splash is what creates buy-in. #RealLifeEthics 115 – “CATCH OF THE DAY” In all the years that I served in leadership posts in the South African Army I developed a few “techniques” to gauge how well or badly things were going in my bases. I always used to say that a useful barometer is to inspect the ablution blocks and kitchens as a first step and that if they are up to standard, then it would follow that the rest of the base would meet my standards. To me, this indicates how well or badly the specific leader is doing to set and maintain standards but, more importantly, whether he is building an ethos in his organisation which indicates shared values, morale, team spirit and a climate of trust! One of the “techniques” that I use when I’m in a restaurant is to ask what “Today’s specials” are or what the “Catch of the Day” is. If the waitron gives me a puzzled look and says that she/he will go and find out it sends me a bad message! It indicates that the waitron hasn’t been properly briefed, that the supervisors/managers are not doing their jobs and that he/she hasn’t bought into and doesn’t own the ethos of the place where he/she works. I recall that some years ago a business colleague and I sat down at a table in a mediterranean restaurant somewhere in Johannesburg and when the waitron came to our table I asked her what she recommended on the menu. She replied, “They do very good spicy meatballs”! The fact that she said “they” and not “we” was a big indicator that she didn’t see herself as part of the team and didn’t embrace the brand and perhaps even the “shared values” of the restaurant. Probably the biggest 'take-away' from what is happening at Chipotle Mexican Grill is that competitive advantage is fleeting. It was just not that long ago that the 'pundits' were blasting away at the chain for their problems and inability to grow! UGH!! All strategy has a time element to it. Anytime one talks about how well or badly an organization is doing, they should frame it with the timing. It is a combination of the efforts of a leadership team, board, employees who understand the 'WHY WE EXIST' and the backing of that 'WHY' with real resources and action. McDonald's roared from about 2003 to 2010... no one is singing their praises right now. Those who have consistently catered to the 'low price' drumbeat for success simply do not understand competitive advantage. Any fool organization can be the low price leader. It takes skill to be the 'low cost' leader and there is only ONE LOW COST leader in any marketplace. The rest are wannabees who increasingly get crushed by margins.
