European Works Council calls on Barry Callebaut for transparency and equality for employees We launch an urgent appeal to Barry Callebaut regarding the lack of transparency and equality within the company. ✅ The EWC believes that Barry Callebaut has only provided superficial information, which means that we cannot yet make our own analysis or formulate counter-proposals. Despite repeated requests, our experts have not received sufficient information to date. In addition, we have identified inconsistencies and ambiguities in the figures provided and in the timing of important decisions. ✅ Another concern is Barry Callebaut's continued distinction between workers from sites with union representation and those without. The EWC strongly rejects the concept of second-class employees and insists that all employees are treated equally, regardless of their location, representation and regardless of individual or collective dismissals. ✅ The EWC also wonders whether Barry Callebaut's recent decision to establish a Global Business Services Center (GBS) in Poland is just the first step towards a similar center in India.   📣 We call on Barry Callebaut to address these concerns and comply with the requirements of the EWC. For example, we want a commitment to European agreements to guarantee fair, transparent and equal treatment of all its employees. In response to our statement above, management has made the following commitments: 👉 There will be an extensive Steering Committee meeting at which our experts (chosen by the employee delegation) will support us to make a thorough analysis of the situation so that we can make alternative proposals. This meeting will take place at the end of April. 👉 Management is committed to equal treatment for all possible stakeholders at BC Next Level. Social dialogue will take place everywhere and the same principles will be applied to every employee in all European countries and sites. 👉 There will be another plenary EWC during the month of May, at which we want to reach European agreements if we have received sufficient information. ✊ We have managed to organize European solidarity and will work together for a true and better future at Barry Callebaut in the interests of employees. A couple of weeks ago, I had the pleasure of meeting one of my marketing heros, #7 on the 2022 Forbes World’s Most Influential CMOs List, and Global Chief Marketing Officer of The Coca-Cola Company - Manuel "Manolo" Arroyo. What made the moment sweeter was that, just minutes before we formally met, my colleagues and I had been presenting to Manolo, and other leaders from The Coca-Cola Company's associates, customers and bottling partners from across the continent. Using the ongoing Coke Studio campaign as a case study, we shared the story of how we were raising the bar in marketing in Africa through Studio X - the execution arm of Open X, a bespoke agency network with multidisciplinary capabilities set up by WPP for The Coca-Cola Company. Afterwards, Manolo personally came over to introduce himself and congratulate us on the pioneering work we were producing. Later, I had the honour of listening to him speaking alongside Henrique Braun (TCCC's President of International Development), and Louisa Ortega (President of TCCC's Africa Operating Unit) about the company's vision for creating lasting value for consumers. He also shared some provocative nuggets that left me feeling personally challenged and inspired to continue on our course; accelerating the business' marketing transformation to deliver on the goal of unlocking the great potential that lies in our rich continent. What I took away from the encounter was a lesson in humility; the ability - when leading a team of vast and diverse talents - to humble yoursef... to actively listen, to make room for participation, to acknowledge every contributor, to recognize potential and champion the best ideas, giving credit where credit is due.
