A couple of weeks ago, I had the pleasure of meeting one of my marketing heros, #7 on the 2022 Forbes World’s Most Influential CMOs List, and Global Chief Marketing Officer of The Coca-Cola Company - Manuel "Manolo" Arroyo.
What made the moment sweeter was that, just minutes before we formally met, my colleagues and I had been presenting to Manolo, and other leaders from The Coca-Cola Company's associates, customers and bottling partners from across the continent. Using the ongoing Coke Studio campaign as a case study, we shared the story of how we were raising the bar in marketing in Africa through Studio X - the execution arm of Open X, a bespoke agency network with multidisciplinary capabilities set up by WPP for The Coca-Cola Company. Afterwards, Manolo personally came over to introduce himself and congratulate us on the pioneering work we were producing.
Later, I had the honour of listening to him speaking alongside Henrique Braun (TCCC's President of International Development), and Louisa Ortega (President of TCCC's Africa Operating Unit) about the company's vision for creating lasting value for consumers. He also shared some provocative nuggets that left me feeling personally challenged and inspired to continue on our course; accelerating the business' marketing transformation to deliver on the goal of unlocking the great potential that lies in our rich continent.
What I took away from the encounter was a lesson in humility; the ability - when leading a team of vast and diverse talents - to humble yoursef... to actively listen, to make room for participation, to acknowledge every contributor, to recognize potential and champion the best ideas, giving credit where credit is due. Being humble in leadership allows you to truly harness the collective powers of your people to create breakthroughs in delivering your business' vision.
