The Graves classification, established in 1953, was a response to the request of the Syndicat de défense de l’appellation des Graves, an organization dedicated to protecting the appellation. The Institut national des appellations d’origine (INAO) played a pivotal role in creating this classification. This system aimed to recognize and categorize the quality of wines produced in the Graves region, specifically in the AOC Pessac-Léognan.
The criteria for classification were based on the municipality and the type of wine, distinguishing between red and white. Unlike some other classifications, such as the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, the Graves classification has a unique feature—it comprises only one level with no hierarchy. Additionally, it is noteworthy that this classification is not subject to revision.
There are a total of 16 Crus in the Graves classification, all of which belong to the AOC Pessac-Léognan. These 16 Crus are further categorized into 7 Château (Red), 3 Château (White), 5 Château (Red and White) 1 Domaine (Red and White) wines. One remarkable aspect of the classification is the inclusion of Château Haut-Brion, which holds the distinction of being the only Bordeaux wine to be classified twice. Château Haut-Brion is recognized in both the Graves classification and the Grands Crus Classés en 1855, a classification that originated more than a century earlier.

As our entire global wine industry goes through a much needed (necessary) reboot, it’s not only the the foundations of geographic “places” that need to be evaluated, but every idea and idealogy that impacts the trade.
What needs to be rebooted? (Not a complete list of necessarily in this order nor all having requirement for regulatory consideration);
1) Focal points of elitism in AVA/Appelation Systems;
2) Marketing and authenticity in advertising ethics considerations (as the new consumer smells a rat faster than you can say “Reserve” of “Made in France” or “Napa”)
3) #subsidy considerations on the impact of supply imbalances internationally;
4) #Internationaltradepolicy and the concepts of “free and fair trade”
….among many other topics (please suggest in comments)

Alexandre de Lur Saluces may have hated his inclusion (indeed the existence) of the book Noble Rot, which told the story of the hostile takeover of one of Bordeaux’s most revered and ancient estates, but it did a huge amount to stir interest again in a wine appellation that has been in danger over the past century of being eclipsed by shinier names.
Few people did as much to shine a light on Sauternes as Lur Saluces, who died on July 24, 2023, at the age of 89. He was a passionate defender of this stubbornly masochistic style of winemaking, where the noble rot ensures grapes with tiny yields that have to be treated entirely by hand, and the vagaries of the weather mean entire vintages are regularly under threat.
From the time he took over from his uncle Bernard de Lur Saluces at Château dYquem in 1968, until his last moments at Château de Fargues in 2023, he did everything possible to uphold the importance of not only his own family estates but the appellation of Sauternes and Bordeaux itself.
For 36 years he was the director – always the epitome of elegance, with a perfect suit and tie that could give Michael Broadbent a run for his money – of Yquem, the 1855 classification’s only Premier Cru Supérieur, or First Growth Superior, that had been in his family since 1785. His son Philippe de Lur Saluces remembers how the Hungarian-born London importer Akos Forczek once boasted to him ‘Alexandre, we had a Suduiraut ‘28 yeserday, it was amazing!’. ‘My father simply replied, conspicuously unimpressed: ‘1928? Oh… ‘ with a clear emphasis on nineteen. He was one of the very few men who could seriously pull off this joke’.

Today, we were delighted to receive an outstanding article about our dear friend—the one without whom Offrian would not exist today—the Legend: Don Pancho.
We appreciate the kind words from Camilo Cesarino for The Rum Lab (with greetings to our friends Federico Hernandez). Don Pancho's significant contributions to the Rum Industry over the past 60 years are monumental and will be remembered.
This moment also prompts us to reflect on Arturo Labarca, another esteemed figure in the world of rum, who is the originator of OFFRIAN RUM (OR).
As we pay homage to both admired men, the Godfather and the Padre of Offrian, we express deep gratitude for what has been accomplished. Understanding our roots allows us to navigate our future more effectively.
Thank you, Don Pancho, for a lifetime devoted to rum, and we extend our heartfelt appreciation for your unwavering support.
Cheers,

When describing Australian Shiraz, common terms are “full-bodied”, “ripe”, “rich”, and “intense” with blue fruit, black fruit, chocolate, and spice notes. These descriptors are in line with the warmer climates of the famous Barossa Valley, the Clare Valley, and McLaren Vale. But did you know that you can also find cool-climate medium-bodied Shiraz in Australia? Meet Mount Langi Ghiran, a pioneer in cool-climate Shiraz since the 1960s.

Why Ventoux will become one of the great appellations of the Southern Rhône
Le Ventoux, a land of the future? Emmanuel Perrin
Boasting the coolest climate in the south of the Rhône Valley and preserved landscapes, the Ventoux vineyard is popular. In recent years, the establishment of ambitious winegrowers and the rise of white wines have been the talk of the town.
In the Ventoux appellation, in just 4 years, the production of white wines has increased by more than a third of its initial volumes. And more than 12% of this 5,500 hectare vineyard is already planted with white grape varieties. It must be said that the combination of limestone terroir and cool climate favors the production of a color that many vineyards in the southern zone envy in Ventoux. “Benefiting from this freshness and such thermal amplitudes, due to the proximity of Mont Ventoux, allows us to have more sparkling whites and with better acidity. In addition, our ampelographic richness, with the Grenache Blanc, Clairette but also Roussanne, Viognier, Vermentino, Bourboulenc, etc. grape varieties, constitutes a formidable toolbox for creating wide ranges in a territory that lends itself to it,” explains Frédéric. Chaudière, winemaker at Château Pesquié and president of the AOC Ventoux.
OFFRIAN RUM (OR) is delighted to announce the launch of a new product line. Today marks the birth of the "Armagnac OBRY" range.
In collaboration with a secular Armagnac estate with a rich history dating back to the Second World War, and the OBRY family (co-owner of Offrian Rum), we are thrilled to present the inaugural VS cuvée.
For a long time, the French DNA of OFFRIAN RUM (OR) has sought expression, giving rise already to a unique-of-the-kind cuvée: Chenin Finish. This singular Panamanian rum aged in French oak barrels from the Coteaux-du-Layon-1er-Cru-Chaume AOC. Now it is about offering a line of Armagnac, this age-old brandy, which needs no introduction anymore. To revisit the past to create the future has something of the virtuous circle of life.
Additional releases are currently in development and will be joining our lineup over the next 24 months. Innovation is at the core of the company, and some of our most exciting projects will come to life through a 2024/2028 plan. Both our passion and hard work are unwavering, and we gonna show it. Especially where least expected.
Meanwhile, we wish everyone in our network a joyful holiday season.
